About Edo Elstak
I studied chemistry and cell biology because of my interest in the molecular events that make life. During my PhD my interests focused on cell biology and I specialized in fluorescence imaging techniques to investigate the molecular components of cellular transport events. At Galapagos I applied this experience in target discovery assay development and screening. Working in a biotech company taught me much about teamwork in a competitive and commercial environment. I just started leading the High-content FACS and Imaging team within SAT and we collaborate closely with many groups at Genmab. You never know where you will end up next, but now I enjoy working in the biotech industry where I can make a contribution to world health every day.
Listed skills include Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Microscopy, and 15 others.

Principal Scientist
As a principal scientist in the screening and assay technologies team I am responsible for coordinating the fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry technologies. With the team we provide researchers in other departments with access to innovative technologies and assays. We scout new technologies, perform proof of concept studies and provide support for design and execution of experiments. With both flow cytometry and microscopy, we can interrogate cells with different modalities, switching whenever this is suitable from higher sensitivity to higher throughput or resolution.
Senior Scientist
Team leader of the high content imaging group in TD&V. This team investigates and applies new high content imaging and analysis techniques for the screening teams at Galapagos. We also provide support for imaging and analysis of current projects in close collaboration with our other sites in Europe. In recent years I was business change manager for a company wide bioinformatics project, subject matter expert and tester for the implementation of high throughput screening data analysis software. Currently I am involved in several projects around data management, ELN and data visualization. Experimental work in the lab focused on target validation efforts for HBV and Fibrosis projects. Furthermore I am Hazardous Chemicals Safety Officer and involved in new lab design.
Scientist
Scientist in assay development and target discovery; specialized in high content screening. Projects: fibrosis, breast cancer and HBV.
Phd Student
- Winner of the IB publication prize 2012- PhD Representative of the Institute of biomembranes 2006-2009- Organizer of the 1st Intercity Young Scientist Meeting nov. 2009- BioBusiness Summer school 2008 participantI performed research in the area of cell biology and immunology to find how defects in a protein can lead to immunodeficiency. This has increased the understanding of regulated secretion in the immune system and may aid in the treatment of FHL3.Thesis: Munc13-4 in release of secretory lysosomes in hematopoietic cells.Activities: Design and execution of experiments, project management, supervising master students, reporting on results in presentations, posters and publications.Techniques: molecular biology, cell biology, fluorescence imaging, TIRF, FRET-FLIM, FRAP
Intern
Internship during my Masters on Influenza A virus and endocytosis by the mammalian host cell system. Techniques used were automated Fluorescence Microscopy and virus handling.
