Founder, Ceo
Started PrivatePlanet.com in order to provide a private e-commerce option to the 67% of online shoppers who were not buying online due to privacy concerns. This was especially important for the teen and healthcare market segments. We put together a great team, plan, and chose a wonderful group of angel investors out of 3 funding options. The dot com collapse ended this venture. We turned down funding because we expected the availability of next round capital in the US to dry up in the following year, as it did, so we did not lose a dime of investor capital. I am still a big believer in the transaction processing business model where one's business value is embedded into an ecosystem. The success of encrypted apps like Telegram, Signal and others indicates that years later privacy is still a very relevant user need.Key learning: 1) uncontrollable / unpredictable macro events happen, despite scenario planning
Director Of Emerging Markets (Corporate Marketing And Business Intelligence)
Directed the team responsible for all corporate new market planning at EDS, the world's leading independent professional services and IT solutions provider, employing 110,000 people and producing $20 Billion in sales. Our #1 achievement here was creating the original Business Process Outsourcing plan that I presented to senior leaders. This new core line of business quickly grew to over $3 Billion in annual sales. Responsible for driving the Cross-functional Team Leadership to regularly evaluate many diverse emerging markets (geography, technology, business model). Developed and communicated the capstone New Market Landscape that helped educate executive leadership and recommend investment. As a branch of the Corporate Marketing and Business Intelligence team, I managed this collaborative research and business planning process by engaging diverse constituencies from across EDS and external analysts, partners and customers on virtual teams. My role also involved ad-hoc consulting on potential acquisitions and large deals.EDS is now Hewlett Packard Enterprise.Key learning: massive companies shifting gears during an industry transformation should think configuration strategy.
General Manager, Eds Colombia
After implementation of an EDS PCC billing system at Celumóvil, Colombia's #1 cellular carrier, I started up and managed EDS Colombia (now Hewlett Packard Enterprise Colombia). This was EDS' first in-country organization in Colombia. We provided a mission-critical software implementation solution to Celumóvil during its own start-up period which set world subscriber growth records for market penetration. Despite extraordinary challenges, we were very successful in large part due to a great team of sharp, hard-working local hires, a few well-placed experienced ex-pats, good integration with mother ship development, and an aggressive and collaborative customer. Our performance surpassed targets for sales and profitability by wide margins, and our customer and employee satisfaction ratings improved to the top of all Communication Industry Group business units in the LatAm region. EDS built off of its success in the mobile carrier vertical to later expand its client base into other vertical markets in Colombia. Given my experience starting up EDS in-country, many years later I was happy to learn that HPE chose Colombia for its LatAm regional center of expertise.Key learning: a team that works diligently together can produce incredible results under the most challenging conditions.
Business Planning Specialist, Strategy And International, Eds Pcc
EDS Personal Communications Corp. (Wireless / Mobile Division of EDS) was the fastest growing tech business in the USA (as Appex Corp.), and was focused primarily on transaction processing for wireless carriers through billing systems and inter-carrier information solutions related to settlement, roaming and fraud prevention - a true eco-system lock in model for a network economy. At the time, more transactions were processed through this data center than anywhere else in the US. I forecasted transactions and resultant revenue for approximately 50% of US mobile network operators, and supported Managers by creating budgets for 3 departments. I later established the Strategic Planning process here as part of BPR. A lot of the advancements just now being introduced in mobile were part of our planning as far back as the early 1990's.Later, I supported the International side of the business with regional mobile industry marketing, focusing on building 3 annual Latin American account plans and reorganization of the Latin America organization. Key learning was ...- the real pace of change in wireless versus the hype- the continuous need to manage client expectations is universal, but relationships matter most- the cultural shift that inevitably happens when an entrepreneurial org is swallowed by a massive company must be managed.
