Working as part of the Energy, Space Time Group on two large projects; identifying data, developing models, analysing outputs and creating the whole suite of scientific outputs. The SiCEDS project developed an interactive energy demand simulation tool for cities to assist stakeholders in making decisions where to invest money in energy infrastructure and efficiency measures. Partners included the Energy Savings Trust, Aecom and Fraser Nash. The second project, based on models developed during my PhD simulated weather driven electricity and heat demand at a fine spatiotemporal resolution to examine the roles of transmission and storage in a high renewables future for Europe.

I spent this time developing a wind generation simulation model, SpWind and a hybrid energy demand simulation model, SpDEAM in python which disaggregated GB energy scenarios temporally to an hourly resolution and spatially to a 0.5 x 0.5 degree grid, driven by global climate reanalyses. I used the models to examine the implications of energy scenarios on residual demand variability, geographical diversity and extreme events to reveal the relative impact of different factors driving demand and supply. Outputs can be found in papers, the PhD thesis and my blog.

Projects Across Europe, The Middle East And North Africa

I carried out one of the final stages of the commissioning process of new and extended power stations through steam blowing or very high pressure air blowing of steam lines.I completed projects in Portugal, Spain, Saudi Arabia and the Netherlands. The location and nature of the projects meant a large amount of autonomy and necessitated on site decision making and a pragmatic approach to project completion. Projects varied in size from very large chemical plants and power stations through the small scale biomass boiler plants. Extensive travel and intense periods of work were required throughout the job. I learnt a great deal about how to manage people and projects in a disparate team from a range of cultures during this job.
