Responsible for the direction of the Petrolina Site. The Unit has more than 100 direct people and a total of 800+ people dedicated to the research and development of corn and soy. Our focus is the development of people and the team. Thousands of new genetic materials are developed through modern breeding techniques. The Site also produces tens of thousands of new maize hybrids and introduces biotechnology and native maize characteristics. Finally, the entire initial process of Suppy Chain is carried out in the unit to meet the entire corn market in Brazil.

In partnership with CIBio secretariat ensured the application and maintenance of biosafety policies and procedures. This ensured the observation and adherence of Monsanto Sugarcane Business personnel to the regulation framework of Brazilian biosafety legislation and internal Company stewardship policies.

Mitigated risks on closing sugarcane business thru stewardship plans and reports of regulated biological material disposal. Partnered with Regulatory for timely and accurate reports to official agencies as Brazilian Biosafety Agency (CTNBio) and Agriculture Minister (MAPA). Acted as business owner to ensure a smooth business shut down.

Increased the team productivity by over 10X thru science and process innovation, introducing concepts from Supply Chain and adopting best management practices executed on other Labs overseas. These actions resulted on effective delivery of biotechnology in commercial sugarcane varieties, reducing production costs and increasing project portfolio value. These values were delivered while creating opportunities for people by on the job development experiences.

Promoted allocation of activities originally executed in Brazil to be conduced overseas, better leveraging local resources. Led step changes improvements of technologies thru a team of scientists, like new molecular characterization protocols and transient leaf transformation used successfully for Agronomic Traits lead prioritization. Such enhancements are in use to deliver biotech value in sugarcane. This resulted in an increased communication, integration and exposure of the local team to the USA and India teams and the results used by other crop research pipelines.

Conchal, Sp, Brasil

Led the operations of Biotech at Conchal, SP, Brazil site, including continuous development of Regulatory, Safety and Security. Led the development of greenhouse and field testing strategies to select and advance biotechnology traits in sugarcane, aligning local breeders and US Biotech experts’ views. The strategies were used to develop and evaluate the traits in cane. Designed the test of Ag Traits herbicide chemistries, including glyphosate in sugarcane. Started the Entomology platform in Brazil to use in Bt trait characterization and evaluation. This platform was later developed to serve trait biotech delivery for row crops product assessment in Brazil

Alellyx was a venture funded Brazilian startup company focused in agricultural biotechnology. In partnership with Votorantim Novos Negócios, developed Alellyx start up which was sold to Monsanto Company. Co-led the advancement of biotechnology traits in eucalyptus, citrus and sugarcane and the development of business strategies, including resource fund raise and project based management. Implemented and developed the platforms for molecular and phenotypic characterization methods, in the lab, greenhouse and field for these crops. Developed the safety for Conchal site and property maintenance for the business.

Uberlândia Area, Brazil

Managed pre-commercial and genetic quality activities for corn,soy and cotton business thru a 100+ total people organization across the different Supply Chain sites and the management of Barretos site. Led the development of strategies which reduced turnaround and costs on genetic seed quality assessment. Led the team responsible for final purification of inbreeds and implemented the purity unit at seed manufacturing. Also coordinated innovation thru Six Sigma and QMS pipelines that resulted in seed make cost reduction and seed manufacturing sites accredited in ISO.

Greater St. Louis Area, Usa

Led the reorganization in a complex team, resulting in a customer focused organization. Directed the development of methods, IT programs and automation that importantly reduced assay cost and turnaround time. This enabled USA Supply Chain and Commercial teams to perform information based decisions with reduced risks for international and internal markets. Such developments were implemented globally.

Started Trait Purity lab in Brazil, resulting in a platform used to perform quality decisions of traited seed. Solved different Production and Research and Development pipeline issue, streamlining processes globally in soy.

Campinas Area, Brazil

Unicamp is a major state funded Brazilian university. Co-lead the development and implementation of Molecular Biology capabilities across several Brazilian Universities, resulting in a lab network responsible for genome characterization studies of different organisms. Such base is considered a step change in the Brazilian scientific community. In addition, a patent application was submitted to USPTO thru Inova Unicamp agency and six manuscripts were published on peer reviewed science magazines, including papers on sugarcane EST and Xylella fastidiosa that are considered genomic landmarks.
