Edward J. Stein, PharmD, MPH, DipACLM served over twenty-seven years as a pharmacy officer in the US Public Health Service, spending his entire career in the Indian Health Service (IHS) at a variety of duty stations in Arizona and retired at the rank of Captain (O-6) in NOV 2021. He lead significant national efforts shaping the IHS Pharmacy Standards of Practice, recruitment and retention of pharmacists in Indian Health systems including pharmacists’ loan repayment opportunities reducing the pharmacist vacancy rate from 17% to 4% and delivered the clinical education and development of pharmacists practicing in Indian Health settings. He personally trained and mentored over 1000 pharmacists and pharmacy residents in patient-oriented pharmacy practice. Captain (retired) Stein spent the last 20 months on active duty responding to the COVID-19 Pandemic by leading the IHS Phoenix region’s logistics efforts, interfacing with tribal, local, county, state, and federal government assets. Now as a Consulting Pharmacist, he continues to deliver presentations to healthcare and pharmacy organizations and schools of pharmacy and is turning his attention to the prevention of chronic disease, pharmacy practice in lifestyle medicine, public health and patient advocacy for access to quality healthcare.
