Overview – Using a social justice-driven teaching approach, I created engaging learning opportunities for diverse students by teaching sociology, coupled with critical thinking skills and extensive data-driven writing assignments.Program Management – Designed syllabi, select readings, and make curricular choices for these courses: 1. Social Problems, 2. Race, Gender & Class, 3. (Im)migration, 4. Social Stratification, 5. Social Order & Change, and 6. Peer Facilitation in Soc. Selection & Supervision – Selected 5 teaching assistants and provide extensive mentoring tailored to their individualized needs. Undergraduate teaching assistants receive support in polishing their presentation skills, instruction on how to effectively assess assignments, and guidance on creating a graduate school application plan. Using a guided-practice apprenticeship model, mentoring of my graduate teaching assistant allows for opportunities to teach guest-lectures. External Relationship Building – Outreached to community practitioners and alumni in helping to create learning opportunities for students in the form of guest-speakers and field experiences. Education partners included: Executive Director of the LGBTQ Center of Long Beach, Shades of Afrika Small-Business Owner, Curator of Educ. for the Museum of Latin American Art, Hub Manager for Building Healthy Communities Long Beach, and Chief Program Director for Communities in Schools of LA.Leadership Driven Results – Applied a teacher-leadership philosophy and subsequently yield high-ranking evaluations. Per my 2015 departmental review, evaluations for “course effectiveness are consistently above the department and college averages…Prof. Lara’s student evaluations, syllabi, and assignments demonstrate thoughtful pedagogy and high expectations for student learning.” The same review noted a high lecture average of 6 on a scale of 1- 6 on the statement, “The instructor was effective at teaching the subject matter in this course.”

Overview – Managed a 6-month mixed-methods study to measure the effectiveness of health literacy text in improving health and wellness for 300 parents of elementary school students.Program Management – In consultation with two Principal Investigators, developed long-term plan for strategically implementing a 4-phase study consisting of 1 pre-survey, 3 post-surveys, 20 focus groups, and individual parent interviews across 4 elementary schools. Budgeting – Provided direction in administering $150,000 in funding to conduct the study, including setting pay-rates, schedules, and compensation disbursement procedures for part-time staff, consultant, and research assistants. Selection and Supervision – Recruited, hired, and trained a team of 25 bilingual researchers to serve in various roles, including data collectors, parent trainers, research assistants, administrative assistants, and document translators. External Relationship Building – Collaborated with 4 principals and 6 parent center coordinators to ensure logistics of project study were effectively streamlined. Youth Development – Mentored 4 undergraduate and 2 graduate students who served on research team by providing individualized coaching and professional development opportunities to improve their public-speaking skills and knowledge of research methodology.Leadership Driven Results – Under my direction, effectively integrated data collection processes to an online project management system, resulting in increased productivity and effective communication between research team members.

Overview – Using a progressive education model, prepared 75 aspiring teachers to become teacher-scholars and agents of social change to improve urban schooling for racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse students. Program Management – Created syllabi, compiled course readers, and implemented robust instruction for these Teacher Education courses: 1. Social Foundations & Cultural Diversity in Education, 2. Second Language Acquisition, and 3. Field Experience in Teaching Methods. Selection and Supervision – Reviewed admission applications for UCLA’s Teacher Education Program and made acceptance recommendations. Supervised 5 social studies teacher-interns and coached them on individualized professional development goals, including classroom management improvement, project-based learning, English Language Learner strategies, and lesson planning. External Relationship Building – Effectively worked with principals to develop professional development plans framed around the needs of teacher-interns and their students. Leadership Driven Results – Drawing from a teacher-leadership instruction model yielded high evaluation scores. An exemplar of evaluation marks include a Fall 2010 report noting a high average of 2.5 out of a 1-3 scale from 13 students rating me on my ability to teach “new knowledge, skills, or understanding” in a Social Foundations course. The same report shared a student comment remarking, “Lara made it really enjoyable to be in class. He is a wealth of knowledge, and balanced instruction with collaborative learning. Though he had so much information to share with us, he genuinely valued our own thoughts and encouraged expression and discussion. He maintained a well-organized class every week, and exposed us to valuable resources and perspectives. I was never made to feel ignorant for my thoughts or questions, and I gained a lot of practical information. Lara was a very inspiring professor.”

Overview – As YEARS Associate Director, provided LAUSD high school students with the opportunity to investigate critical issues influencing civic engagement and educational achievement of youth. As adjunct professor, prepared educators to transform classrooms into learning hubs fostering academic excellence, social purpose, meaningful service, and personal fulfillment.Program Management – Developed innovative critical research program for 15 high school students consisting of data collection and fieldwork at national and state political conventions. Wrote syllabi, selected readings, and developed curriculum for these courses: 1. Mentoring and Team Leadership, 2. Design and Action Research Methods, 3. Cultural Diversity, 4. Second Language Development Theories, and 5. Second Language Development Methods. Established English Language Learning (ELL) Clinics at elementary and middle schools. Successfully created college access and mentoring programs at public high schools. Selection & Supervision – Recruited, selected, trained and mentored high school students in developing their qualitative research methods. Provided clinical supervision for 100 teacher credential candidates practicing their SLA training at the ELL Clinics.External Relationship Building – In faculty role, collaborated with principals, teachers, afterschool coordinators, Healthy Start Coordinator, and Youth Policy Institute Coordinator to implement ELL Clinics. In Associate Director role, built relationships with local, state, and federal elected leaders to further the work of the YEARS program. Also engaged representatives from the National Association of Latino Elected Officials and Telemundo correspondents to mentor YEARS students. Overview – Provided high-quality leadership overseeing a joint MA/Teaching Credential program comprised of elementary, secondary and special education teacher-interns. Program Management – In consultation with faculty, LAUSD administrators, and California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, designed and implemented a two-year teacher preparation program emphasizing the education of the “whole child.” Developed literature effectively conveying complex education policy and legislation germane to teacher credential matters. Provided program evaluation using both qualitative and quantitative measures. Budgeting – Oversaw financial operations of program, including disbursement of Americorps grants, institutional funding, and coordination with university bursar. Selection and Supervision – Recruited and admitted 425 graduate students over the course of 4 admission cycles. Managed student advisement and outreach services while also directly providing fieldwork support for 12 social studies teacher-interns. Hired and supervised a coordinator and graduate assistant for the program while providing staff with professional development and job performance evaluations. External Relationship Building – To ensure healthy partnership building, collaborated with education stakeholders including school administrators, mentor-teachers, district officials, and state teacher credentialing representatives. Grant Writing – Secured a $150,000 grant from the William Hearst Foundations, earmarked for special education teacher-interns. Leadership Driven Results – Successfully grew the program from 2 cohorts per admission cycle to 5 cohorts per admission cycle. Under my guidance, I created a student database for credential benchmark tracking, resulting in improved office operations.
