StraighterLine is an innovative online education provider that enables students to dramatically reduce their higher education costs by taking for-credit college courses online for $99/month. StraighterLine credits can be transferred to hundreds of colleges and universities nationwide. As Chief Product Officer, I was responsible for managing product, technology and academic teams. Our team achieved four major goals during my tenure with the company: (1) We designed, built and launched a new technology platform (based on open-source); (2) We grew a 7-person internal technology team to manage development on a go-forward basis; (3) We expanded StraighterLine's course catalog from 15 to more than 60 courses and tests; (4) New partnerships w/McGraw-Hill, Thinkwell, Rosetta Stone, Saylor.org, ProctorU and Excelsior

During my tenure at Kaplan, I had three major roles with increasing responsibility:(1) Initially, I served as General Manager of Kaplan's $14M high school private tutoring business, which helps more than 5,000 students improve their SAT and ACT scores each year. During my tenure, three of our students received perfect scores on the SAT or ACT, the average student improved their SAT score by 245 points, and profitability improved by more than 15% each year. (2) Later I was promoted to advise the leadership teams of eight Kaplan Ventures companies, eventually serving as Interim President of two turnarounds within the portfolio (both of which were successfully reorganized and divested). During this phase, my role focused on business strategy, financial analysis, executive recruiting, product management, enterprise sales strategy and acquisitions.(3) Finally I was offered a chance to reboot and lead Kaplan's corporate venture capital effort -- where I identified, invested in, and served on the Boards of three high-growth education technology companies.

Company successfully sold to Blackboard in 2012. Investment realized 2.9x return (in 2 years).

Led a world-class Business Development team that signed and managed strategic partnerships with Scantron, The Princeton Review, Kaplan, ETS, Excelsior, AHA! Interactive, and others that accounted for 25% of SchoolNet’s sales growth during my tenure. Also led the effort to acquire and integrate AHA! Interactive.

Our team built the first learning management system for tablet-based education (about fifteen years before the market was ready). I was responsible for strategy, product management and solution sales efforts to large school districts and State DOEs, focusing on Microsoft SharePoint, Encarta and Class Server.

Mascot Network was very similar to Facebook, but 7 years too early. At its height, Mascot Network provided college portals and intranet facebook communities to more than 100 colleges and universities, including Columbia University, Providence College, and Arizona State University, and had very innovative features like student photo profiles, photo upload, student discount e-commerce and online groups. Mascot Network taught me that timing is very, very important.

BridgePath provided online recruiting and resume software for entry-level job seekers and staffing agencies. Very similar to HotJobs and Monster.com at the outset, BridgePath raised less venture capital than those larger companies but still found a successful niche serving college student jobseekers and temp agencies and was sold in 2002 to an enterprise software company that serves the recruiting market, Bullhorn (www.bullhorn.com).

The Corner Meal Plan was the first off-campus meal plan in the country. Just three years after launch, our debit card generated more than $1 million in sales and was used by more than 4,000 students at the University of Virginia to eat at local restaurants instead of the cafeteria. Since selling the business in 1996, the third wave of owners grew the business to 33 campuses as Off-Campus Dining Network (www.ocdn.com).
