I worked as an assistant in the Political/Economic Section during my second internship at the US Embassy in Conakry, Guinea. In this position, I gained a thorough understanding of the political and economic issues that are pertinent to US interests in Guinea and West Africa generally. I conducted research on a variety of issues and submitted reports to Political and Economic Officers, which they used to develop official cables that were sent back to Washington. I was also responsible for the US Embassy Conakry's 2017 version of an annual report on expropriation claims by American investors in the country. The report was reviewed by an Economic Officer, then sent to Washington where it was compiled with those from other embassies before being presented to Congress. Throughout the summer, I read news articles, legal documents, conducted research, and drafted reports entirely in French, substantially improving my working knowledge of the language. I also practiced speaking French daily with my Guinean coworkers.

During my first internship at the United States Embassy in Conakry, Guinea, I worked in the Consular Section. My duties were to assist Consular Officers in administrative and office tasks, research, updating files and records, and producing educational videos for the embassy's official YouTube channel. I learned about the function and structure of a US embassy, diplomatic security, and numerous consular-specific processes. I also became comfortable speaking French daily with coworkers.
