About Edward Gutierrez

in my previous experience, I was able to help tutor kindergarten students all the way up to high school seniors who struggle with any school subjects such as math, biology, English, etc. Additionally, ST. Vincent De Paul also offers students free nutritious meals that can be picked up at a current location that is closest to them. They also try to help with internet connections since they realize a lot of teens and kids do not have access to wifi at home. The organization and schools use devices that give their students hotspots that can be used to work on online assignments and navigate their computers at home. If obtaining a computer is an issue, they also give computers to their students! Another organization that I was volunteering at was Barrio Nuevo. They are helping to combat poverty and other issues surrounding their communities. They are a Christian organization located in South Phoenix that works with children, the elderly, and strengthening family units. Their ultimate goal is to reduce or remove all forms of social marginalization such as hunger, racial alienation, crime, poverty, illiteracy, and violence. In my last position, I was a Teacher Assistant for the Department of Economics at Arizona State University to which I tutored, proctored exams, and helped the professor set up the upcoming lectures. In my current internship with Maricopa County Juvenile Probation, they focused on recruiting ASU interns for helping administer the Maricopa Youth and Family Engagement Survey. I am currently working with other individuals alongside Dr. Fine in this assessment. It is extremely notable that the Maricopa County Juvenile Probation Department cares about improving its establishment and wants to give youth and families an opportunity to provide feedback. The overall goal is to improve procedural justice regarding the probation process. Additionally, the Youth and Family Engagement Survey assess parental/youth involvement in probation, understanding of the probationary process, and relationships with the youth’s probation officer. Our overall task is to make initial contacts with families via phone, email, text, and/or mail. Whenever a parent or youth is willing to take the survey at the time of the call or contact, I would conduct the survey at that very moment. We are currently supervised by Elizabeth Eells, who ensures we are up to tasks with the expectations put in place.

I split each activity into its appropriate age group (i.e. 5 years old: making sock stress balls, 6 years old: making name tags, etc). I also made a list of 25-30 activities (12-15 ideas per camp) and save them in a google/word document. During the camp, the children participate in hands-on activities that we pull from our help from home guide and from other sources that we think can be beneficial. Staff and volunteers work alongside the children engaging them, talking to them, and encouraging them and their efforts in volunteering from home. Activities include jeopardy games, making get-well cards, making holiday cards, making name tags for residents we house, making stress balls, etc. These activities are mainly craft-based but new ideas are welcome. The service camp hosted two different camps for different age groups targeted for children ages 5-10 years old and Brophy high school students + parents. Camp Little Helpers is specific to children between 5-10 years old to teach them about virtual volunteering and get them involved in helping in their formative years. Camp Love in Action is specific to Brophy high school students and their parents. This camp is to help teach these students empathy and help them get to know St. Vincent de Paul at a deeper level. We offer parents resources to help their students during the school year.
