Following academic training in Politics, Philosophy, and Cognitive Neuroscience, I entered the psychedelic space in January 2018, working on both scientific and policy projects at the Beckley Foundation. Having one foot in either world left me impressed and excited by the scientific value and clinical potential of psychedelics, but also underlined the importance of carefully considering their societal, ethical, and narrative dimensions, which will — necessarily — play just as big a role in the future of the industry as their raw medical efficacy. After 12 months of consulting for firms seeking to enter the psychedelic industry, I returned to academia at the University of Oxford's Department of Psychiatry and Wellcome Centre for Ethics and Humanities. In October 2020 I began a doctoral project in empirical ethics, funded by the Wellcome Trust, to articulate the bioethical implications of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. This newly (re-)discovered treatment modality challenges a host of the core concepts of medical ethics in novel ways, and it is crucial that potential ethical hazards are properly understood and accommodated before the mainstreaming of psychedelic therapy. For early movers, this means litigation risk minimisation. For the industry in the long term, this means well-established norms in practice and policy to optimise patient outcomes without jeopardising the best values of clinical practice. While my academic research remains the focus of my time and thinking for now, I continue to support bespoke projects with Psilonautica, the boutique psychedelic consultancy and think tank I co-founded in 2021.
