Dr. Schuchman's research focuses on understanding the pathophysiology and treatment of rare genetic disorders, including the lysosomal storage diseases. His laboratory uses the tools of molecular biology, cellular biology and biochemistry to accomplish their research, with particular expertise in the construction and characterization of animal models and preclinical evaluation of new drugs. His work on Types A & B Niemann-Pick disease (acid sphingomyelinase deficiency) has led to the first DNA-based screening methods for this disease and the first FDA-approved treatment for the non-neurologic features of the disease (Xenpozyme). He also was a co-founder of Plexcera Therapeutics, a spin-out company based on research from his laboratory that focused on developing acid ceramidase-based therapies for rare and common disorders, including Farber disease and Cystic Fibrosis. In 2016 Plexcera was sold to Roivant Sciences. Dr. Schuchman is also a co-inventor of a new therapeutic approach for a group of lysosomal storage diseases known as the Mucopolysaccharidoses. This approach is currently licensed to Paradigm Biopharma and in mid stage clinical development. He has published over 250 scientific papers on his research and is an inventor on over 30 issued or pending patents.
