For many years I’ve had the opportunity to hone my executive leadership, organizational management, and program development skills through direct experience and by providing training and consulting to more than 500 organizations across the country. From overseeing a $4M federally-funded national project focused on addressing health disparities in racial/ethnic minority communities, to building a chief strategy office in a multi-million dollar nonprofit, to serving on a national collaborative of civil rights and racial justice organizations, I’ve devoted myself to helping organizations and collaborations to discover their “sweet spot” in regards to key strategy questions such as: “What are we most passionate about?”, “What do our communities tell us they need?”, “What can we excel at?”, and “What can we get funded to implement?” A key secret to successful strategy is in the implementation, and this often requires new resources. Having written over 50 federal and foundation grant applications, I have an 80% success ratio. Colleagues have dubbed me “the Grant Whisperer” for my ability to analyze the key strategies and approaches that score well with grant reviewers yet remains aligned with our mission, vision, and values. I have had the privilege of serving as plenary and keynote speaker for a variety of conferences and panels. As a passionate and engaging storyteller, I’ve even managed to get a packed ballroom to pause their dining and conversations as I shared my personal experiences navigating racism and xenophobia. But I also equally enjoy facilitating sessions for smaller groups. Typically at least 95% of participants indicate not only very high participant satisfaction, but also that they increased their knowledge / skills as result of the session. One of my career highlights has been developing a 9-month Leadership Fellowship program that has taken more than 50 leaders on the journey of transformational leadership and storytelling for advocacy and action. As a leadership coach who is grounded in the values of respect, fairness, and kindness, I’ve helped community leaders across the country explore their leadership purpose and identify their transformational edges.
