About Edward Borek
As Program Analyst for the Dreamers Support Office at Miramar College, I currently coordinate campus and community-based resources for underserved community college students. In addition to this role, I develop non-academic programing like student engagement events and outreach workshops to increase participation in special population student services programs.I am a proud product of the California Community College system! In my time as a CCC student, I made it my mission to create an equitable and engaging experience for all students. Serving as President of the Associated Student Government and as Student Trustee on the Board of Trustees, I used my positions to advocate for free textbooks and other economic relief initiatives for students. I advanced equity, justice, and inclusion by co-authoring the college's equity definition and assisted the institution in successfully launching it's inaugural Equity Summit.I am now a senior at San Diego State University pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and an Honors Minor in Interdisciplinary Studies. I serve on two student organization executive boards: Marketing and Membership Officer for the 25+ Aztecs, which aims to connect non-traditional students, and Communications Chair for the Jane K. Smith chapter of Mortar Board National Senior Honor Society. As a non-traditional student, I am always more than happy to share my unique experiences with my classmates and colleagues. While I was in high school, I was concurrently enrolled at a separate institution where I studied culinary arts and restaurant management. I graduated from both in 2008. Since my first job at 14 years old and until the onset of the pandemic, I worked in the hospitality industry—16 years that provided me an extensive skillset including customer service, time management, relationship cultivation, numeracy, and practical skills as a chef, bartender, and event coordinator.Creativity and story-telling are just as important to me as any other human endeavor. Over the years, I have participated in collaborative and solo art shows at venues like the House of Blues and the Andaz Hotel in San Diego, and I have had written works published. I use my graphic and web design skills to produce marketing and other print and digital content for myself, my employers, and clients. And, because the stories with the most impact are often told out loud, I have engaged in several speaking engagements and various media appearances.I use my diverse professional background to creatively solve modern challenges in our communities.
