As a lawyer, I assist public authorities and companies in complex procedures such as the recovery of costs under administrative law and private law in the event of incidents which have resulted in environmental damage and financial loss (including Chemie-Pack, various asbestos fires (such as Westland), collisions (Baltic Ace/Corvus J) and the (regional) approach to soil contamination as a result of the deployment of Underground Thermal Energy Storage (WKO)). In addition, I provide advice and conduct litigation in the area of the enforcement of environmental and other violations, liability for damage caused by climate change (State/Urgenda (see The Hague District Court 24 June 2015, The Hague Court of Appeal 9 October 2018 and Supreme Court 20 December 2019 (ECLI:NL:HR:2019:2006)), contracting with public authorities and issues concerning government liability.I publish fairly regularly on topical legal issues such as the use of geothermal energy (Underground Thermal Energy Storage), liability for CCS (carbon capture and storage) or climate damage and the Environmental Liability Directive (2004/35/EC). In addition, I regularly give talks and am a guest lecturer for the Grotius specialist course in Spatial Planning and Environmental Law, and at the EUR (Erasmus University Rotterdam) and the UVA (University of Amsterdam) for the subjects of Maritime Casualties and International Climate Law.Specialities: private and administrative environmental liability law, climate damage liability, ECHR, international environmental liability treaties (inter alia 1992 CLC and FC and Bunker Oil Convention), soil contamination (PFAS), geothermal energy, carbon dioxide storage, government liability, enforcement and supervision.
