I am an experienced software developer and researcher with a deep understanding of software engineering. My main strengths are that I am able to see how technologies can be applied to business problems, and to work as part of a diverse team to apply these solutions and deliver value quickly. My strong theoretical background in computer science allows me to quickly see where bottlenecks and problems may occur; my years of experience working in a consulting role within an enterprise and with external clients allows me to communicate effectively with stakeholders and team members. For the past four years I have been working for a large publishing company, helping them understand and adopt new technologies where they can improve the value proposition to their customers.Prior to this I worked as a researcher into Semantic Technologies at the University of Aberdeen, where I worked on two major research projects. During this time I was the lead developer and researcher on two platforms: ONTOSEARCH2: a semantic search and reasoning engine, and TrOWL: a tractable reasoner for expressive ontology languages. Both of these platforms featured technology and research that were published in major international conferences. Before working at the University of Aberdeen, I was co-founder of a web development agency. As technical director I built websites and consulted for organisations such as the Scottish Government, Aventis Pharma, Cambridge and Durham universities, DC Thompson publishing, as well as local startups and SMEs.

Applied Research EngineerWolters Kluwer Sep 2012 - Jul 2015Alphen Aan Den Rijn, NlAs an Applied Research Engineer, my main responsibility is to look for new technologies and apply those to business problems within Wolters Kluwer. I work with business units to try to understand their needs, and then match these needs to practical adoption of advanced technology. The group works closely with user experience and product development teams to ensure that the outcomes are inline with the strategic goals of the enterprise, and have a clear route to production. As well as working with business units, I also work with other technical consultants within Wolters Kluwer to guide the adoption process and onboard new technologies into the standard product suite at Wolters Kluwer. I am an active participant in the Architecture Forum which is an international cross business team responsible for advancing the software architecture of Wolters Kluwer's global platforms. -
Content Semantics ArchitectWolters Kluwer Aug 2011 - Sep 2012Alphen Aan Den Rijn, NlWhen I joined Wolters Kluwer it was as a Content Semantics Architect. My primary role was to help Wolters Kluwer transform their content standards and technologies to a more semantic model. In this role I worked with the publishing businesses to help them understand and implement semantic technologies in their pipeline. In addition, I helped the core platform development team exploit these new semantics in the content management, search, and discovery platforms. -
Research FellowUniversity Of Aberdeen Nov 2008 - Aug 2011Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, GbI worked as a research fellow on the MOST project - aiming to bring together semantic and software engineering technologies. This was a European research project that brought three Universities (in Scotland and Germany) together with three enterprises (in Germany, Poland, and Austria). My role in the project was to work on improving the available reasoning capabilities, and optimizing the techniques used to improve performance. As well as this, I contributed to other work packages through regular meetings and workshops, and helped to drive collaborative innovation between the different project members.I worked on several new project proposals for the university, attended international conferences and seminars to present my research, worked as a teaching assistant for several courses, and helped to develop the lectures and coursework on semantic technologies at the University. -
Research AssistantUniversity Of Aberdeen Oct 2004 - Jul 2008Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, GbI joined the University of Aberdeen in October 2004 as a Research Assistant on the Advanced Knowledge Technologies (AKT) project. During the time I worked on this project, the primary focus of my research was understanding how reasoning over rich semantic models could be made more computationally tractable, by employing optimizations such as semantic approximation. I also worked with other researchers to develop techniques for reasoning over fuzzy and probabilistic models. On the AKT project, I was collaborating with researchers at six other centers of excellence across the UK. As well as this I was working as a teaching assistant in the University, primarily on courses focusing on software engineering and semantic technologies. -
Technical DirectorCynosure Design Jun 1999 - Oct 2004Cynosure Design was a company I founded out of University with two co-directors. Our goal was to create amazing websites for our clients, going beyond the offerings of local providers at that time. During this time I worked with many diverse technologies to deliver these sites, and produced work as diverse as online testing solutions, the technical solution for a dating startup, websites for the local newspaper group (their first venture into direct online publishing, as well as hosting their classified adverts). As technical director I was also responsible for finding and hiring talented people. As the business evolved, I provided consultancy and technical services for many local SMEs, as well as some major national and multinational companies. We also collaborated with Scottish Enterprise, the local Enterprise Trust, Chamber of Commerce, and the Princes Trust, to provide free consultancy and reduced price services to small businesses and startups in the region.
