Edward Morgan is an engineering leader who has spent over 25 years working in industries from defense to retail but never intended to work in technology at all. He was studying journalism at BU when he mistakenly answered a want ad for an "editor" at a law library. Upon discovering that it was a data entry job that he found intensely boring, he realized that he could automate much of it by writing a program in Word Perfect Macro Language. He found that he had an aptitude for programming, learned Perl, and inadvertently wound up automating himself out of his data entry job and into a position as a website administrator. Later, he founded his own consulting firm and provided technology solutions to governments and non-profits across southern New England (and learned languages other than Perl). Eventually, he started working for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and built an application that completely changed the way grants were managed for state government agencies that work with children with developmental disabilities, saving taxpayers millions of dollars. That earned him a CIO 100 award, and his work was also recognized by the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. From there, he launched himself into working for startups and Fortune 500 companies. He quickly learned that building teams of diverse individuals was the key to success, so he focused most of his efforts on learning how to hire well. The teams he built were diverse in thought and culture and outperformed many of his peers' teams. During the pandemic, one of the teams he built and managed was able to drop the work they were doing and pivot to building a telehealth application, which they were able to deploy in less than four months. He decided to bring his expertise in hiring to others by founding Gordian Knot, a company dedicated to bringing the art and science of hiring well to organizations to help them create diverse teams that will outperform their rivals. He lives in Providence, RI, and has for the majority of his life. Also, he'll swear up and down that Providence is better than Boston in every way, so please don't get him started on that.
