About Edward Sayers

As a life sciences researcher focusing on cell biology and drug development, I have collaborated with many industries from large pharmaceutical companies, such as AstraZeneca and GSK to local small-medium enterprises, helping them resolve problems utilising my extensive research experience. The focus of my research to date has been on analysing how modern biotherapeutics (such as nanoparticle formulations or antibody-drug conjugates) interact with cell models. This has revolved around developing assays that critically analyse cellular uptake and effective cargo delivery (for example, mRNA being delivered by lipid nanoparticles), as well as how these biotherapeutics move across natural barriers in the human body (such as blood-brain barrier, or delivery through the lung).Through various research projects, I have developed extensive experience in cell based analysis techniques such as fluorescence microscopy and its quantitative analysis, flow cytometry, mammalian cell culture and cell model development, as well as proteomic and plate based assays. As an experienced researcher within Cardiff University, I regularly train and supervise visitors in the lab, be they undergraduates with limited experience through postdoctoral researchers needing to learn new skills. I also manage microscopy facilities within my department, making sure the equipment is maintained and available for use as well as training new users on the equipment and providing advice on how it can be used in research.Information on my publications: https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&user=Hj61Zh4AAAAJ

Edward Sayers Work Experience Details
  • Welsh Blood Service
    Postdoctoral Research Scientist
Welsh Blood Service Nov 2023 - Present
  • Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd
    Industrial Research Fellow
    Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd Sep 2018 - 2023
    Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom
Supporting Life Science SMEs in Wales and Ireland in research and product development. Through this, I have worked with a number of small companies from developing an in vitro model for the blood-brain barrier to developing protein formulations for lung delivery. This role also requires regular information sessions with the companies and feeding back developed SOPs, results as well as formal reports to the funder.I also manage, supervise, maintain and train users on our confocal microscopy system, our high-throughput fluorescence microscopy system, and our widefield microscope, and support and train users on the flow cytometer. In addition, I also supervise and support students and new staff within the lab as well as undertaking more formal teaching within the MSc Cancer Biology and Therapeutics program
  • Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd
    Posdoctoral Research Fellow
Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd Apr 2022 - Oct 2022
    Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom
In collaboration with GSK and seconded onto this position due to my expansive microscopy and endocytosis experience. This role was to gather evidence for the underlying causes of a side effect of an in-clinic biotherapeutic in primary cell lines. This role involved the regular reporting back to the company of experiments undertaken and results generated, noting that all data needed to be disclosed to regulatory agencies due to the biotherapeutic being licensed for use.Within the department, I also manage, supervise, maintain and train users on our confocal microscopy system, our high-throughput fluorescence microscopy system, and our widefield microscope, and support and train on the flow cytometer. In addition, I also supervise and support students and new staff within the lab as well as more formal teaching within the MSc Cancer Biology and Therapeutics program
  • Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd
    Postdoctoral Research Associate
Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd Mar 2016 - Sep 2018
    Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom
A project in collaboration with AstraZeneca to determine the reasons behind why there are different levels of transfection in clinically relevant cell models when delivered by a lipid nanoparticle therapeutic.Through this, I developed assays looking at different aspects of endocytosis and trafficking as well as developing scripts to quantify microscopy data gathered in experiments. Results were regularly reported to the company through a combination of online and in-person meetings. This project generated a successful manuscript and led to further research within AstraZeneca.I also manage, supervise, maintain and train users on our confocal microscopy system, our high-throughput fluorescence microscopy system, and our widefield microscope, and support and train users on the flow cytometer. In addition, I also supervise and support students and new staff within the lab as well as undertaking more formal teaching within the MSc Cancer Biology and Therapeutics program
  • Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd
    Postdoctoral Research Associate
Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd Jan 2016 - Mar 2016
    Cardiff, United Kingdom
Seconded onto this position due to my cell biology and microscopy expertise. The project was to analyse a temperature responsive nanoparticle in cancer cells. I initially developed assays for this project and trained the Research Associate who was eventually employed to undertake the project.Within the department, I manage and train in core microscopy facilities. Within the lab, I train and supervise postgraduate students in equipment and assays they required as well as undergraduate projects.
  • Cardiff University
    Postdoctoral Research Assistant
    Cardiff University Nov 2012 - Jan 2016
    Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom
As part of a multi-industry, multi-academic pan-european partnership, my role within the work package was developing cell models of biological barriers (lung-blood, gut-blood, blood-brain, skin) for analysing nanoparticle formulations. This involved developing extensive cell culture experience as well as developing assays to test the nanoparticle formulations. Clear, concise and informative communication was vital in this project and was delivered through online teleconferences, in-person presentations and collaborative reports highlighting the different elements of successful analysis.I first undertook the management of core microscopy facilities, involving maintenance, safety and training. I also supervised undergraduate students and trained and supported new postgraduate students.
  • Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd
    Research Technician
Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd Jun 2012 - Oct 2012
    Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom
Further collect data to support a successful patent application for a device invented during my PhD that allowed correlative light-electron microscopy of non-adherent cell types. This involved the writing of a report used in the submission of a successful patent application.
  • Cardiff University
    Laboratory Technician
    Cardiff University May 2011 - Jun 2012
    Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom
Analysis of uptake of cell-penetrating peptides and development of new therapeutic peptides. This involved fluorescently labeling peptides, separation by HPLC, and performing live-cell microscopy and flow cytometry of their uptake within adherent and non-adherent human cell culture models.
  • Orchid Cellmark
    Dna Analyst
    Orchid Cellmark Aug 2006 - Sep 2007
    Abingdon, England, United Kingdom
Genotyping DNA for government and private contracts. This involved preparing samples for genotype analysis under GLP conditions and maintaining the DNA sequencers. Genotyping results were also semi-manually analysed and results were written into reports for customers.
  • Health Protection Agency
    Placement
Health Protection Agency Sep 2004 - Aug 2005
Sequencing and analysis of bacteriophage against P. aeruginosa
