If you clicked the 'more' button to read more information about me... here it is: I love cheesy "B" movies. The latest was a throwback treat - 'Battle Beyond the Stars'. I challenge anyone out there to find a better example of the worst aspects of 'Star Wars' and 'The Magnificent Seven' rolled into one bite-sized, 90-minute treat. It stars John-boy, the Man From U.N.C.L.E., Hannibal from the A-Team, and that dude who always plays the villain. PLUS! - if you look hard enough you'll recognize one of the clones as someone who is probably somebody too. The movie is about a peaceful planet that sends a young man (John-boy) - in a very weirdly shaped space ship - to find mercenaries to protect their planet from the evil aliens (the guy who always plays bad guys). Half the movie is collecting the crew and the last half is a single, really (really) terrible battle scene with effects that would have been great for the 1936 version of 'Flash Gordon' but just don't quite do it in a post-Star Wars world. There's also a confusing ground invasion that's really beyond description. All of that notwithstanding, I highly recommend 'Battle Beyond the Stars' for a rainy Saturday or when you just want something on for background noise and the occasional "What just happened?" when you catch something out of the corner of your eye while you're doing household chores.
