About Edward Barber
Versatile, detail-oriented aeronautical engineer with seven years of industry experience across a spectrum of VTOL aircraft advanced design duties for commercial and military applications. In my current role with Otto Aviation, I provide class-A lofting support for the design of aerodynamic surfaces including wings, bodies, junction fillets, and ducted systems. I take pride in striving for continuous improvement.Previously, I was serving as a Staff Engineer in Overair's Flight Sciences group. In this role my responsibilities included vehicle layout and sizing; mission performance analysis; CAD lofting of outer mold line (OML) surfaces for release to manufacturing; detailed aerodynamic analysis of aircraft and propellers; and mentoring young engineers. I particularly enjoyed coordinating analyses and collaboratively leveraging that data into new understandings of vehicle capability.Prior to Overair's founding, I was an Aeronautical Engineer at Karem Aircraft, where I was fortunate to work closely with Abe Karem. Under Abe's guidance, I learned to thrive in the conceptual design environment, where trades are far-reaching and multi-disciplinary, and where initial design requirements may be only loosely defined. Seeing his approach to design, and how he was able to build upon lessons learned by past designers, helped shape my own perspective. Before Karem, I was a graduate research assistant under Ilan Kroo at Stanford University. There, I helped design, build, and fly a prototype modular UAV for the NASA LEARN2 program. That experience solidified my belief that efficient engineering is rooted in a solid understanding of first-principles, especially when exploring seemingly unintuitive phenomena. In my spare time, I enjoy learning new skills and tools, painting, bicycling, hiking, tinkering, coding, RC flying, and visiting local museums.
Listed skills include Matlab, Microsoft Office, Solidworks, Aerodynamics, and 13 others.

Sr. Engineer, Aircraft Lines And Surfacing
Sr. Engineer, Aircraft Lines And Surfacing
Staff Engineer, Flight Sciences
• Coordinated configuration sizing, layout, and performance trade efforts for production aircraft conceptual design• Developed prototype aircraft outer mold line (OML) loft and skeleton; maintained parallel releases in OpenVSP and 3DX formats to facilitate access to vehicle data by engineering teams requiring different geometric representations• Strategized aerodynamic, performance, and loads analysis approaches to balance fidelity and turnaround time• Architected single-source-of-truth system through product data, experiment, and toolchain git repositories• Established team strategies for effective Jira task coordination, including kanban and dashboard tailoring• Served to mentor junior engineers and foster collaborative culture within twenty-person Flight Sciences team
Aeronautical Engineer
• Investigated and presented layout performance and safety trades, leading to as-built Butterfly eVTOL configuration• Defined rotor design workflow using OpenVSP and CHARM; released final OML in 3DX for prototype manufacture• Identified benefits of 3DX ICEM toolbox for class A surface creation over Generative Shape Design (GSD) alone; established streamlined approach for rapid wing/rotor/body iteration in OpenVSP and final class A lofting in 3DX• Implemented MATLAB tool to fit traditional airfoil coordinates with aerodynamically equivalent NURBS curves• Designed control surface geometry and produced loads data, including multi-element and all-moving surfaces• Collaborated across teams to balance performance, structures, and industrial design goals in vehicle loft• Facilitated rapid team growth by leading weekly team meetings and conducting hiring candidate interviews
Aeronautical Engineer
• Supported aircraft design bids through analysis, writeups, and presentations, resulting in multiple government contract awards (including US Army FARA Phase I) and $25 MM Series A investment in Overair Butterfly eVTOL• Conducted tiltrotor point and mission performance analysis, including use of vendor turbine engine decks• Performed rapid airfoil, wing, rotor, and aircraft aerodynamic analysis using XFOIL, AVL, XROTOR, and CHARM• Designed internal and external aerodynamic surface lofts using CATIA v5 GSD toolbox and Star-CCM+ CFD• Restructured CATIA v5 nacelle digital mock-up for US Army JMR TD test article detailed design and fabrication• Managed subscale model CAD definition and fabrication; participated in subsequent subscale test activities• Incorporated shop technician feedback into subscale composite part design, drawing release, and fabrication• Coordinated with and produced engineering artifacts for external engineering subcontractors and business partners
Propulsion Design & Integration Intern
Performed nozzle CFD simulations and optimization using adjoint solver methods. Reviewed and summarized current research papers on jet flow CFD prediction methods for advanced nozzle designs.
Propulsion Design & Integration Intern
Developed a methodology and MATLAB program to prepare jet engine inlet CFD data for flow distortion analysis. Developed an Excel-based wind tunnel parameter-scaling tool for aircraft icing experiments. Transcribed and condensed reacting-flow experimental data, descriptions, and conclusions from technical papers into presentation format for internal distribution and CFD model verification.
Intern Software Engineer
Outlined an online database so that U.N. carbon credit methodologies could be accessed and actively used to calculate carbon credits in real time, including the interpretation and translation of methodology formulas for use in the program. Crafted option trees for each methodology to ensure the correct emission method was chosen. Work took place during the summer of 2010 and the summer of 2011.
