I'm a Professor of Neurology at UCL and Associate Director of the Huntington’s Disease Centre at UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology. I run a programme of clinical and experimental neurology research in Huntington’s disease, focused on developing of new treatments for Huntington's disease.I'm a Consultant Neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London's Queen Square — part of University College Hospitals London (UCLH) NHS Foundation Trust. I run Clinics in general neurology and neurogenetics and a Multidisciplinary Huntingtons Disease Clinic.I studied medicine at Christ’s College, Cambridge University, graduating in 2001, and have worked in clinical neurology and HD research since 2005. My PhD research on biomarkers and inflammation in HD was undertaken at UCL with Prof Tabrizi, and won the 2009 Queen Square Prize in Neurology.I believe that scientists have a duty to make their work accessible and understandable to the people who need it most. So, in 2010, I co-founded HDBuzz, an online source of reliable, impartial, easy-to-understand information about HD research. HDBuzz is now the world’s foremost HD research news source. In recognition of this, I was awarded the 2012 Michael Wright Community Leadership Award by the Huntington Society of Canada.I have authored 6 book chapters and over 80 peer-reviewed publications. I serve on the advisory panel to the Huntington’s Disease Association, the Scientific and Bioethical Advisory Committee of the European HD Network and the steering committee to the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group on Huntington’s disease. I’m Associate Editor of the Journal of Huntington’s Disease.

Clinical Lecturer In NeurologyUniversity College London Feb 2011 - Feb 2015My research focuses on Huntington’s disease, a fatal, autosomal dominantly inherited neurodegenerative disease that usually begins in mid-adult life and produces cognitive, behavioural and movement problems. No cure or disease-slowing treatment exists for HD but, uniquely among common neurodegenerative diseases, Huntington’s disease (HD) is caused by a single known genetic mutation. This has enabled the development of many promising therapeutic options designed to target known pathogenic pathways in HD.BiomarkersMy research aims to develop meaningful biomarkers to facilitate and empower clinical trials of new therapeutic agents. A biomarker is anything we can measure that tells us something about a disease or whether a drug is working.I am particularly interested in the study of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for the purpose of understanding the pathobiology of HD. CSF is a clear fluid, produced by the brain, that surrounds, nourishes and protects the nervous system. It can be collected through a minor procedure called a lumbar puncture or ‘spinal tap’.My biomarker research won the 2009 Queen Square Prize in Neurology and the 2013 prize for the best research presented at the CHDI Foundation HD Therapeutics Conference.I am establishing a programme of CSF collection, and using new techniques to study it and develop new ways of understanding Huntington’s disease and helping to develop exciting new treatments. I am also developing novel magnetic resonance imaging techniques to study the production and movement of CSF in HD. -
