Ed (E.W.) McCleskey has been a Science Program Officer at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative since March 2017, and previously was a Science Officer for 10 years at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He was a professor and laboratory director at the Vollum Institute of Oregon Health Sciences University (1993-2007) and at Washington University School of Medicine (1986-1993). His research addressed the biophysical properties of Calcium-selective ion channels and the physiology of ion channels that trigger different types of pain. He taught physiology and neuroscience to medical students and graduate students, and directed the Neurobiology course at Woods Hole Marine Biology Labs (2004-07). His Bachelors degree was from UC Berkeley in Biophysics, PhD from U Washington in Physiology and Biophysics with Wolfhard Almers, and postdoc at Yale with Richard Tsien. Before Berkeley, he attended U Southern California for two years where he was All American in several swimming events. High schools were in California: Santa Clara HS (graduated 1971) and Livermore HS.
