I specialize in getting these systems to talk to other front-end and back-end systems, too. Evaluated the architecture of mission-critical National Telephone Number and Address System (NTAS), using a process based on SEI's ATAM method. The major goal was to identify areas that could present problems in production, and recommend corrective actions. Consulted via Spherion (then known as Interim Technology) to American Express, Phoenix AZ. Provided systems integration solutions for American Express based on n-tier architecture and host integration technologies. Designed and implemented in-house system and framework, named eGate Server C++ Application Framework, on Solaris using WebSphere MQ and XML, as well as eGate Client using WebSphere MQ, XML, and ActiveX/COM. This became a standard within American Express Automation Technologies. Used eGate framework to implement “Instant Approval” EAI gateway that linked Web front-end to mainframe back-end.

Managed a network of VAX minicomputers and IBM PC microcomputers and a staff of 20. (The company name has nothing to do with any radical groups. This was 1988).

Worked in the Middleware group to interface operating system calls and primitives to the RTL/2 language for an air-traffic control system (RTL/2 and VAX MACRO-11). Researched VAX internals to find a way to control a parallel port, which I used with a small transistor circuit I prototyped to implement a primitive I/O failover system for two VAX-11/782 hosts linked by shared memory. Strict MIL-STD environment.

In this 2-year Ambulance Control System project, I integrated the back-end VAX-11/751 and the VAX front-end processor (FEP) with InterSystems M/VX using VAX PASCAL and VMS system calls. The FEP was running late, so I wrote an FEP simulator based on the specs, and developed the integration to that. When the FEP was delivered from Plessey in the UK, there was only one bug (and it was an FEP error), so that went well. I also worked on the application in M/VX.
