About Edwin Hargrave
Science and Technology and Academic Planner with a passion for leading design teams to provide buildings and environments that meet and surpass research and learning objectives. My clients include leading colleges and universities across the country; marine research institutions and agencies seeking to understand climate change and ocean health; pharmaceutical corporations developing innovative approaches and devices to improve our health and wellbeing; and educators committed to innovative learning environments and approaches that spill out far beyond the classroom. I have a special passion for marine research, owing to my father’s career as a marine biochemist. His demonstration of a rigorous research approach-the grunt of field work, the long hours in the lab, and the push to implement successful outcomes-introduced me to the culture of the scientific workplace, and provided a basis for understanding evolving contemporary trends in the new scientific workplace. It also introduced me to many of the best windsurfing spots on the Atlantic Coast.I'm also a musician, and I've spent nearly as many hours sitting on a stage behind a drum set as I have leading design workshops and planning sessions. I’ve learned that achieving successful results in both arenas requires exactly the same approach: having tireless passion; knowing your instrument; assembling the best players for the gig; scoring the best chart at the outset with all of the information that’s known; and then listening carefully and interacting constantly with everyone in the room to surface the true opportunities and the best design solutions through a collaborative process. I love both vocations dearly, but designing for research and learning will continue to take first priority, helped by the fact that the hours are slightly better. I'm committed to supporting evolving research and learning objectives as an architect, and look forward with great enthusiasm to the exploration and the interaction ahead.
