I used to think leaders were born and that the gene had passed me by. I spent the early part of my career following and implementing the directives of others and doing it well. One day I found myself at a “fork in the road”. It was a situation void of clear direction and with a bleak outlook. After waiting for someone else to guide us, I realized it was not going to happen. I started to move forward and forge a new direction and to my surprise, for the first time others were following my lead. It has been 25 years since that epiphany and I continue to hone my leadership skills. Since then I have sought, even created, opportunities to lead and it has become one of my biggest strengths. Through critical thinking, personal development, formal training, coaching my team, mentoring others and seeking my own mentors I have continuously developed the invaluable skill of knowing how to lead others. It is one of the most rewarding aspects of my career. As I debated how to use this summary section, I chose to highlight the aspect of my business acumen that best represents me as a professional; leadership.
