As an application engineer in the petrochemical industry, I was responsible for providing critical solutions and applications with regards to corrosion, scaling and fouling control to maintain stable processing in cooling water systems, boilers and crude distillation units. The latter area is my primary field of expertise, for which I reviewed optimum process control performance on a daily basis. Not only does this involve practical matters such as field work in the refinery and laboratory practices to ensure adherence to product quality specifications, but also continuous communication with the customer to optimize and innovate (sustainably) wherever possible. Naturally, as work in this field requires, safety also plays a large role in this and has been one of my primary focuses and interests. Continuous conduction of risk assessments, safety observations and procedure evaluations are key to protecting the health of myself and my fellow colleagues on site. I strive for ultimate transparency between all involved parties in order to constantly improve in SH&E.

After obtaining my Bachelor of Science with distinction, I found the ultimate opportunity to dedicate some time into further developing my soft skills by working for Orator. During my time as Tender Communication Assistant, I provided aid in the development of a masterclass in EMVI-Engineering, which helps engineers create successful customer-oriented offers in the tender industry. Besides working for Orator during this period of time, I also worked on the publishment of a book chapter on designing ecological education for circularity with my co-authors Bas van den Berg and Tim den Hoedt. This was the result of an ambitious school project that started in 2019 and continued outside of university (for more background information, view the ‘Conceptual Design of a Circular Business Model Innovation Tool’ segment in my Projects section).

My graduation internship took place at Corbion Biomaterials, which is a department that specializes in the development of polymers for biomedical applications ranging from sutures to orthopedics, as well as for drug delivery and tissue engineering purposes. My thesis revolved around the investigation of the properties of such a material and earned an 8.3 as the overall mark, allowing me to graduate from my bachelor's program with distinction.

For my first internship, I assisted the companies Duijvestijn Tomaten and Kitchen.blue by establishing and documenting 6 distinct industrial manufacturing processes for their spread and topping products. Besides also designing the layout of the corresponding factory, I aided the firms when it comes to the insurance of complete (theoretical) food safety, for which I created an extensive HACCP model. Along with this, I provided additional microbiological product analyses and an abundance of hygiene and machinery sanitation recommendations. Details with regards to the main components of my assignment can be viewed in my 'Projects' section below. I finished my internship with a 9.0 as my final grade.
