About Erica Schultz

Currently a Bioorganic Associate Professor in the Chemistry department at Lake Forest College.Previously worked with Professor Emily P. Balskus at Harvard University in the Chemistry and Chemical Biology department, developing non-enzymatic reactions capable of chemically modifying small molecules in the presence of living systems and developing a biocatalytic Friedel-Crafts reaction.Previously, as a NSF Graduate Research Fellow working at UC Berkeley with Professor Richmond Sarpong, I worked on the effective and scalable synthesis of the tetracyclic core of Kopsia alkaloids related to grandilodine C, which has shown a range of pharmacological activities. My work in the Sarpong group has also focused on fused-pyrrole and dihydroazepine formation, via the interaction of a Rh-carbenoid with an allene or diene, respectively. I was able to apply the pyrrole methodology to the first enantioselective total synthesis of cycloprodigiosin, a natural product that has demonstrated anti-tumor and immunosuppressant activity. In addition to research, I have been involved in the Bay Area Scientists in Schools program, organizing a team of volunteers to go into classrooms to teach curriculum I helped develop on “Green Chemistry” and “States of Matter” for elementary school students. I have also been involved in the Expanding Your Horizon Conference for middle school girls, developing and leading a chemistry workshop. I have also been a head graduate student instructor at UC Berkeley for advanced undergraduate chemistry classes and teach incoming graduate students how to be effective graduate student instructors during the UC Berkeley conferences for first time instructors.

Listed skills include Organic Synthesis, Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Total Synthesis, Methods Development, and 6 others.
