Soon Wei is the CEO of Art Printing Works (APW), a creative industrial space in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. At APW, he has successfully rolled out ambitious plans to transform the old commercial printing factory into a campus that includes a collaborative workspace, a food-and-beverage belt, and event venues. The APW campus also features pocket parks as part of a collaboration with Think City to realise Projek Poket Pokok, an urban rejuvenation initiative to green up the industrial space. Soon Wei also manages TRP Heritage Sdn Bhd, which oversees the revival of The Royal Press, a heritage letterpress printing house in Malacca, to transform it into a living museum. The Royal Press is the recipient of grants from Yayasan Sime Darby and CIMB Foundation, which contribute towards conservation efforts and the creation of an educational hub for the craft of letterpress. In both projects, Soon Wei seeks to ensure that heritage is preserved even as he pivots the businesses for the 21st century to ensure sustainability. His personal mission is to build creative ecosystems around functional spaces, and he is passionate about repurposing spaces while imbuing them with creative ideas.Aside from his work in rejuvenating old spaces, Soon Wei is also an advocate for the arts, and was previously involved with a theatre company called the Footstool Players. He has been invited to speak at TEDx KL and the Harvard Asia Business Conference, and has shared about his rejuvenation work in various media and publications including Monocle, The Star and BFM.

Managing DirectorThe Royal Press (Trp Heritage Sdn Bhd) Jan 2012 - PresentMalacca, Malaysia / Kuala Lumpur, MalaysiaThe Royal Press is a living letterpress museum. It was founded in 1938 as a letterpress printing house in Jonker Street, providing its services to the small traders and community of Malacca. The Royal Press survived through the Japanese occupation, and thrived post-war. However, with the onset of modern printing technology in the 1960s, business began to decline. By 2000, The Royal Press was a shadow of its former glory. From over 30 employees at its peak, only 4 remained to continue running a dying business, catering to a small, loyal clientele. It was then in 2009 that Ee Soon Wei, grandson of founder Ee Lay Swee, decided to step in to give the aging family business a new lease of life. After returning from his studies overseas, Soon Wei embarked on a journey to learn more about his roots, making weekly trips to Malacca. Through these trips, he realised a passion and conviction to preserve not only a family legacy, but also an important facet of Malacca’s culture. TRP Heritage was thus set up, to manage new initiatives for the transformation of The Royal Press. Today, The Royal Press museum houses a range of letterpress machines and printed artefacts from its 78-year printing history. There is also an extensive lead type library with over 150,000 blocks in four writing systems: Roman alphabets, Chinese characters, Jawi, and Tamil scripts. This unique multilingual aspect makes The Royal Press one of the oldest surviving polyglot letterpress museums in the world. It was also during this period that a documentary about the letterpress museum aired on The Discovery Channel, garnering more public attention. The Royal Press was also fortunate to receive financial support from Yayasan Sime Darby and CIMB Foundation, which meant the museum could undergo the restoration it needed to become a safe and functional haven for its artefacts.
