I helped to plan logistics for an "It's On Us" campaign which involved students signing the "It's On Us" pledge against sexual assault and passive bystanding while enjoying refreshments and activities before attending a free music concert.

PieceMaker is a 3D printing startup which brings easy-to-use touchscreen kiosks to toy stores and other locations which draw interested customers and provide a lot of inventory for a small amount of space. For the summer of 2016, PieceMaker partnered with the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium and offered personalized 3D printed souvenirs for zoo visitors.As a retail associate I assisted with both sales and technology. In the sales position, I greeted zoo visitors with a friendly, approachable demeanor. I often showed visitors of all ages our 3D printers while they were running, explaining the basics of 3D printing to those who don't know much about it. I also showed examples of our pieces and the kiosks where visitors can design their own toys, keychains, jewelry, and souvenirs. In the technology position, I organized the customers' orders which come from the kiosks by queuing up the design files to one of our 3D printers. I also ensured that all the printers were functioning properly, including heating the printers and changing the plastic ABS filament so that pieces were the correct color. After prints were completed, I handled the merchandise by carefully removing it from the printer, and I packaged it for the customer.

While I was a graduate student, I held a graduate student assistantship (GSA position) with the School of Education Office of Admissions & Enrollment Services. This office primarily admits graduate students, so I learned a lot about requirements for master's and doctoral students. As an assistant, I helped with many administrative tasks such as filing documents and keeping computerized records up to date. While assisting with these tasks I also helped any visitors who called or came to the office in person.When I was not assisting with "front of the house" tasks such as these, I worked on developing my own materials for the office. I created many resources for new students, such as guides to Pittsburgh and its nearby neighborhoods, a list of graduate student clubs and opportunities, and informative materials about financial aid or commuting to campus for distance-education programs. I also created many flyers and advertisements which required aesthetic design primarily using Microsoft Publisher, a program I was not previously familiar with.I also worked on some research projects while with this office. One was to analyze search terms to determine what methods of online advertising were driving the most traffic to our admissions websites. Another was to look at the number of students of color each program was admitting throughout the years to determine which programs had success in attracting diverse candidates and which programs needed assistance on this task.

I assisted graduate students and post-doctoral researchers with their research in topics such as computer usability, security, and privacy. I often contacted, scheduled, and interviewed participants who agreed to come in for research studies in which they use new security tools, websites, or interfaces. As an interviewer, I received IRB training to ensure that I met all of Carnegie Mellon's research requirements for dealing with human participants. In one project, I managed a MySQL database of over 200 participants, which required learning some basics of MySQL and taking care to keep private participant information secure. These participants agreed to download software which tracked day-to-day computer usage habits, so I also assisted participants by troubleshooting any issues with the software. When I was not assisting with participants, I also organized, categorized, and labeled qualitative data such as survey responses or social media posts. Additionally, I assisted with editing research papers, and I am even listed as a co-author on one published paper.

The Bonner Leaders Program is a national community service program which offers federal work-study positions to students who regularly volunteer off campus at approved sites. Campuses offering Bonner Programs as a funding alternative to academic or athletic talent, rewarding students for their dedication to giving back to communities. As an intern at Chatham, I worked directly under the Assistant Director of Student Activities to bring a chapter of the Bonner Leaders Program to campus for Fall 2015.I began my internship by researching peer institutions and reaching out to contacts to determine what best practices existed in establishing and running a Bonner Leaders Program. I collected my knowledge in organized documents so it could be referred to later by anyone assisting with the program. I also created and gave a presentation explaining the Bonner Leaders Program to representatives from the various service sites where students would be volunteering.The second half of my internship was dedicated to designing a Bonner Leaders Orientation program. This was a challenge because the Bonners Orientation occurred before general First-Year Orientation, so I needed to engage both first-year students who had never been on campus and returning students who were very familiar with Chatham. After scheduling move-in time, icebreakers and socializing, I also scheduled a speed-interviewing time for students to meet with all of the volunteering sites and rank them based on preference (the sites also ranked the students). After scheduling everything, I assisted as a Orientation Coordinator, running ice-breakers, explaining expectations of the Bonner Leaders Program, and facilitating the interview sessions.

TalkBank.org is a research database created and managed by faculty and staff of Carnegie Mellon's Psychology Department. The transcriptions of spoken language are used research projects in fields such as linguistics, child language development, second language acquisition, neurology, and other medicinal fields.I started by transcribing what are known as controls--recordings of typical adult speakers of American English. Later I worked on transcribing adults who had aphasia (a spectrum of speech disorders usually caused by stroke) and recordings of children, either playing in groups or pairs in classrooms or interacting with their families at home.Those with Broca's aphasia can still comprehend language, read, and write, but they struggle to form grammatical sentences. Broca's aphasics typically communicate by uttering single words or sounds to convey emotions or needs. Broca's participants were difficult to transcribe as listening to recordings required a lot of patience since utterances typically had large amounts of space between them. Transcribing every uttered sound was crucial since they were so few. Those with Wernicke's aphasia can produce language grammatically, but their comprehension is impaired. Wernicke's aphasics typically struggle to read and write and their speech patterns, while grammatically sound, often use incorrect words (i.e. referring to a cat as a sandwich). Wernicke's participants were difficult to transcribe because they spoke quickly and unpredictably, so re-listening was usually required. Wernicke's aphasics also use neologisms (invented words) frequently, so tracking these, correctly marking them, and adding them to a special dictionary required extra work.English speaking adults without disorders, and children both in group and individual settings. In my work, I helped to implement a more codified system for transcribing gesture. I also utilized the Git file transfer protocol to update databases.
