Putting to use my deep experience as a corporate communicator, writer and journalist, I founded freelance writing business Well Told (welltold.com.au). I happily tackle a wide range of written formats, from interview-led, well-researched journalistic features, to ghost-written opinion pieces and speeches, reports, case studies and book reviews. I love nothing more than getting deep into an issue and also regularly bring stories to life by shooting companion photos. Founding deputy editor and lead contributor for Westpac Wire (westpac.com.au/wire), a news hub for thought leadership, commentary and opinions, on finance, the economy and community. I carried all stories from initial idea to produced piece on-sites, right through to distribution via Westpac's social media platforms and enews. Led a team of five within Westpac's corporate affairs group to ensure the array of sustainability initiatives undertaken by the bank were effectively communicated, to investors, Westpac's people and customers, and the Australian community. This included leading and preparing the bank's annual sustainability reporting, along with speeches, social media, community partner engagement, iIndigenous affairs initiatives and issues management.

At top 25 listed company, Insurance Australia Group, I was part of a team of corporate affairs, investor relations and government relations specialists. Together we managed an issues-rich combination of owning iconic, household brands with a great amount of emotion attached; having one of the largest shareholder bases of any Australian company; offering products which are fundamentally important to society but in an industry that ranks only slightly ahead of banks in the likeability stakes; and having a business which is built on managing risks, some of which include the devastating impact of natural catastrophes.

I transitioned from a consultancy role to working in-house for the listed regional subscription television provider, Austar. This role gave me a fantastic opportunity to sink my teeth into the full spectrum of communication practice areas, in an industry environment which was as fun as it was challenging. The bulk of the role included communicating Austar’s financial results to the media and market, managing the AGM, annual reporting, website and other corporate collateral, as well as internal communication for all CEO and corporate messages. I was also involved in some fascinating issues, including curbing the prevalence of piracy of subscription TV and lobbying the government for change in media laws to help create a more level playing field between subscription and free-to-air television services.

My induction into the world of corporate affairs was through global communication consultancy Gavin Anderson & Company (now known as SEC Newgate). Fresh from uni, I started out in the Sydney office and was fortunate to work alongside some great operators on some fairly major transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, floats and demutualisations, as well as longer term investor communication and issues management programs. We advised senior management in companies across a variety of industries on the best ways to communicate with the market, shareholders, media, community and employees. I also gained valuable experience working out of the UK office. While there, I was involved in some fantastic projects in London, Lithuania and Russia, and was seconded into Edinburgh-based insurer Scottish Provident to help manage communication to support its demutualisation and sale.
