About Elisabeth Foster-Johnson
"Utilize your resources" - said by every higher education faculty and staff ever. This phrase haunted me throughout my entire academic career and has seeped into my adult life. Although it is meant to be helpful advice, on it's own I've realized how detrimental it can be. As a first-generation, Indigenous college student when I heard that sentence my immediate response was to shut-down because it made me feel as though I didn't belong. How could I have when I couldn't find or knew how to use the resources everyone talked about. How can we change the higher education and adult experience with reprogramming our minds to help rather than just navigate. "Utilize your resources" is like giving someone a machine to use but not letting them know how to use it, what it is for, and where they can find the manual. As I battled this I realized the more I messed with things the more I began to understand them. However, this is not the case for everyone else. I'm naturally curious and will go to depths to try and find answers, but what do we do with clients/students/colleagues don't or can't?That question helped me develop what is called the FRESH drive which created a supportive community to share how to use, where to find, and what to do with certain resources. More importantly it's all trial and error documentation of my personal experience. FRESH has now become much bigger and is nationally availabile to students and adults to learn about "Financial Responsibility and Establishing Scholarship Holdings". I love having the opportunity to share my experiences and work to inspire the inner curiosity in high school to college students. I have spoken on podcasts, held presentations virtually and in-person, and manage an online drive to promote success in higher education paths. I have worked in higher education and non-profits for four years educating others on "adulting" and "utilizing their resources". I would appreciate the time to talk with your audience.
