Reverse engineering of an E. coli strain that evolved through adaptive laboratory evolution and became tolerant to short-chain fatty acids to expand the toolbox of rational engineering strategies for applications in biorenewable chemicals. Investigated a mutation found in the rpoC gene, which encodes for the β’ subunit of the RNA polymerase and determined the scope of tolerance conferred by the mutation. Additionally, employed the CRISPR-Cas9 System to study the role of individual genes in phenotype characteristics of the new strain.

My research project initiated the development of a Biological Assay to detect and quantify the activation of Transforming Grow Factor - B1 using a fluorescent reporter. In ten weeks, I was able to establish a general transfection protocol for the mammalian expression system of interest and laid the groundwork for the production of the radiation-sensitive protein. At the end of the summer, I was selected to represent the NSF BioXFEL Program at the Buffalo Summer Research Day and be one of the eight presenters among the 80+ student and faculty members present.
