I contributed to the Open Disclosure project, which attempts to summarize campaign contributions to local political candidates. The backend is a Django app that downloads publicly available records of contributions to campaigns by various individuals and groups.Check it out at https://www.opendisclosure.ioOpen Disclosure is a volunteer project of Open Oakland (https://openoakland.org), which is a local Code for America brigade.
  • Uc Davis
    M.S. Research In Applied Mathematics

    Davis, California, Us
tldr -- I made an improvement to a numerical method that is used for simulating microchips and other stuff. The focus of my research was Krylov subspace projection methods for model order reduction, specifically applied to interconnect-modeling for VLSI circuit simulation or control-systems used in automation. More generally these methods can be used for dimension reduction of any LTI descriptor system model.• Developed a new thick-restarted Krylov-subspace method for MIMO model order-reduction, which will prove useful in the future as circuits become ever more complex and the matrices representing them become too large for currently used methods. Krylov subspace methods are still the primary choice for order-reduction of the largest systems.• Introduced a new orthogonalization process for complex-valued Krylov subspace basis vectors that reduces computational costs to half of those currently used with naive complex othogonalization.• Created a visualization for the complex-frequency response of a transfer function.• https://github.com/ebrensi/Thesis_material
  • Ucla
Institute For Pure And Applied Mathematics (Ipam)
    Ucla Jun 2006 - Aug 2006
    Los Angeles, Ca, Us
I was the team lead for a student research project under the sponsorship of Symantec Inc., at the IPAM RIPS summer program on UCLA campus. We worked on spam detection techniques for image-based email spam.• Developed an approach based on image segmentation. Several of the spam images were comprised of a common text message or logo, but with differing backgrounds meant to confuse an automatic detector. My technique segmented a potential spam email images into scale-invariant features and created a database of probable spam components. • Collaborated with great colleagues on "Image Similarity Techniques For Detecting Image-Based Spam" (see in publications section)
  • San Jose State University
    Student Researcher
San Jose State University Jan 2005 - Jun 2006
    San Jose, Ca, Us
Participated in two NASA sponsored CAMCOS research projects: (1) "Translating Differential Equations Models into Kernel Methods, Part IV"• Wrote software to implement and numerically compare two Green's-functions for a Fokker-Planck equation, which Jeffrey Scargle et al were using to simulate distribution of mass in the early universe using cosmological background radiation as the initial condition.• Developed animated visualizations for comparison of the two methods, and presented the results at Sonoma State University for the Northern California Undergraduate Mathematics Conference.(2) Exploring the efficacy of a new model of an astronomical accretion-disk:This project was directed by Prof. Slobodan Simić and industry liaison Jeffrey Scargle. Our project investigated a model of the accretion-disk typically found around a black hole or neutron star. We investigated a model of radiation emitting from such a disk. We used a cellular automata model called the "dripping-handrail", originally developed by James Crutchfield.• Developed two different implementations of dripping-handrail model, and an animated visualization that simplified explanation of the process.
