The aim of this subproject is to explore in close collaboration with the partner projects in the Research Group MUSIS (DFG FOR 1083) validity limits of the Richards equation for describing bare soil evaporation in particular during stage-two evaporation, where the soils unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and vapor diffusion in soil dominate the evaporation process. In this project, we aim to obtain a quantitative description of the processes that govern water transport in hydrophobic soils. Experimental investigations about water in hydrophobic porous media will be combined with inverse numerical modelling of water transport. The project is located in the field of environmental sciences, and will contribute to knowledge about water and energy fluxes in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum.
