• Designed and built a low-cost Raman spectrometer that utilized a digital camera as a detector in an attempt to improve on a previously built digital camera based spectrometer. While the spectrometer did show potential for UV-Vis experiments, it was of limited use for Raman spectroscopy, showing no improvement over the previous instrument. • Performed a comparison of newer and older infrared spectrometers to determine if older, more economical instruments could be used to collect quality data when performing micro-analysis. It was found that older instruments could be used to identify polystyrene samples down to 50 µM, but newer instruments did collect higher quality data.• Utilized ATR-FTIR spectroscopy to analyze pigments in pigment loaded polypropylene fibers based on previous transmission methods. Quality data could be collected in ATR mode for multiple pigments, resulting in calibration curve correlations matching or exceeding correlations resulting from the previous transmission methods.
