Research into the application of LED-chips in lighting fixtures for professional and functional applications. The research addressed the sensitivity to temperatures and the influence on the lifespan, the lumen maintenance and the stability of the spectral composition. The purpose of the research is to develop a fixture as an integrated cooling body, based on a timeless design. Why a cooling body? A LED-fixture can only function well if the fixtures offer sufficient cooling currents of air. Egbert Keen designed a series of fixtures that meets all the requirements for a LED fixture to work well, based on this long-term research. The result is a decorative and functional design that has a virtually unlimited lifespan.

Egbert Keen founded Artilite Light Architecture in 1978. His vision was to apply new techniques and understanding in light technology. He was the first to introduce halogen lighting in 1978 in the Netherlands. Halogen at that time offered huge possibilities to make very small fixtures. In 1982 he launched a range of fixtures for the professional market with indirect light. This was a very new way of lighting that had not yet been discovered in the Netherlands. Despite the many advantages – a feeling of space, people’s wellbeing and health aspects – this new way of lighting initially met with wariness, until in the end the system proved successful.The famous Dutch lighting companies Raak Licht Architectuur and Indoor Lighting were taken over in 1994 and 1999 and the three companies continued under the name Centre for Light Architecture. However, the advent of LED lighting – which Keen considers a revolution in the thinking on light and light-related technology – prompted Keen to sell his shares in the Centre for Light Architecture and to apply himself to mastering the new techniques
