EMT-I F/T for Mercy Ambulance, Grand Rapids, Michigan - Operated on Medic 171 answering several hundred emergency calls for service. Founded by Ronald Brady in 1952 in Grand Rapids MI. Ron Brady's son Scott became a paramedic and eventually the President and CEO of Mercy. Mr. Brady had a reputation of always providing the most advanced vehicles and equipment. In 1974 Mercy purchased one of the first Modular Units in the US. In the late 1960's Mercy operated out of a converted Gas Station (Division Street). In 1990 Mercy moved from the Gas Station to a modern Facility still in use by AMR in Grand Rapids. Mercy's competitors were Buds Ambulance in the 1960's and 1970s. Buds went out of business several times before finally closing their doors for good in 1984. In 1981 a new competitor surfaced, Life EMS. (I briefly worked for Life EMS as an EMT prior to transferring to Mercy, while attending Davenport University's AEMT program.) Mercy operated in Grand Rapids, Fennville, Plainwell, and Holland MI; Richmond, Alexandria, and Virginia Beach VA; Reno NV; Fort Wayne IN. Mercy continued expansion purchasing Alexander Ambulance in Evansville IN in 1993 before being purchased by MedTrans in 1994. In 1997 MedTrans purchased AMR and adopted AMR Name. In 2005 Evansville operation extended to Lexington KY. In 2009 AMR Evansville 911 contract renewed dropping the subsidy and including exclusivity within the city limits.
