About Emily Johns-Buss
In 2020 I made the decision to return to school to pursue a Masters in Geology after over 6 years working in the petroleum industry in Calgary. My thesis is studying rocks from the Jeanne d'Arc basin located offshore Newfoundland. I get to continue cultivating my interests in petroleum geology while also broadening my experience to conventional plays and rift basins. I have analyzed my samples using a zircon double-dating method that combines fission-track and U-Pb dating at the University of Calgary and I hope to use my data to improve our understanding of where these sands came from and the rift evolution of the Newfoundland margin.

Business Intelligence Analyst
Geologist, G.I.T.
Geologist, G.I.T.
Development Geologist - Montney Formation, NE BC:My focus was gaining an understanding of the role of development geologist and practicing the skills involved in maintaining and executing a 5-year plan. During this time I also built a 3D Petrel Model of the Montney Formation that encompassed 20 townships. The geomodel integrated sequence stratigraphy, cellular layering, property modeling and data analysis. Its function progressed and improved geological understanding, enhanced visual simulations and advanced well placement planning. After 1.5 years I evolved into the primary development geologist for the Montney Sunrise Pool in NE BC. During my role as development geologist, I managed a 140 horizontal well program, executed the drilling of 8 horizontal Montney wells, and evaluated land sale and swap opportunities. A major part of my role was communication between diverse teams, maintaining organized tracking systems and keeping detailed records for program execution.Geoscience Chief Team:At the end of 2015 I rotated into the Geoscience Chief Team. I received extensive mentoring from multiple Geology Advisors working on projects including managing company-wide core analysis data and rock geomechanics. My rock geomechanics work was focused on regional Montney stress characterization. In a small group we learnt the language of geomechanics and began applying methods to improve our understanding of how the Montney breaks. Within TechLog I explored vertical stress profiling methods, which resulted in creating a geomechanical log suite including DFIT-corrected minimum horizontal stress profiles. Integration between microseismic and vertical stress profiles aided in deciphering stimulation complexity.Software Experience: Petrel (Geoscience Core, Data Analysis, and Property Modelling), Techlog, Spotfire, Petra, GeoScout, Wellview, RTDTracker, Wellsight Systems, Pason, Accumap, Geographix, JDEdwards, Microsoft Office.
Student Geologist
Provided a full reservoir evaluation of the Cretaceous Chinook Formation in Bighorn-Kakwa Area, Alberta. Developed reservoir characterization skills including logging and interpreting core, hand-contouring maps, competitor analysis and well location recommendations.
Student Geologist
Evaluated the Cretaceous Belly River Formation in Central Alberta. Project focus was analyzing the effectiveness of cased-well log data in identifying water-prone zones.
