I participated in a hydroacoustic research project studying the effects of boat noise on harbor seal vocalizations off the coast of Vancouver Island.Field work involved twelve hour days conducting visual surveys of the study site, and collecting seal counts and behaviors using a theodolite and nautical binoculars. This occurred throughout summer during inclement weather, involved carrying heavy and awkward equipment for long distances, and camping near the study site for weeks away from home.I independently made judgments based on established protocols and procedures in the absence of the supervisor. Data was accurately recorded and maintained in an Excel spreadsheet database.My work ethic secured me a supervisory role, and I was able to establish and maintain productive and respectful relationships during the duration of the team's collaboration. I aided in the analysis of the recording and taught myself how to detect seal vocalizations using the sound analysis program Raven Pro 1.5, and Osprey on Matlab.Using ArcGIS, I created a study site map of the area.
