CurrentFor the past 1.5 years, TajarbaGah has been working to promote computer science education and activity-based learning in Pakistani schools. We have been conducting workshops where we give exposure to our students about technology, not just software but hardware as well. In Islamabad, we have been focusing on serving working-class families who cannot afford to pay what other STEM or Edtech startups are charging to teach kids coding. To bring the cost down we had to design our own curriculum, activities, and kits based on open source software and hardware. We have been running our pilot program in partnership with The Educators School Islamabad Campus for almost a year now. We are validating the academic and non-academic impact of our curriculum on the students. We are also gathering data about the awareness in local families about the importance and impact of kids coding. During the autumn of 2017, we also spent the two months in Misgar Valley HUNZA (its the last human settlement before Khunjerab Pass). There, we worked with two schools where along with coding, we trained our students in robotics and electronics as well. Even though there are many multinational NGOs working in Gilgit-Baltistan, we were sad to learn that we were the first to teach coding at the school level in that region. Our trip was sponsored by Innovate. Educate. Inspire Pakistan and they covered the cost of our food, travel, and lodging for two months.
