I was supposed to be a musician, having studied at one of the most prestigous conservatories in the world. For the longest time that picture represented guilt, remorse and mostly, failure. One day, my teenage son, not bound by any constraints of the past, announced he was composing a flute and piano piece for the two of us to perform at a competition. I really tried to wiggle out of it but my son was unmoved by my protestations. As a leader in the professional environs, I create a safe and inclusive environment for my team to take risks, possibly fail, and ultimately succeed. Be bold, curious, optimistic, prepared, resourceful, and persistent. Believe in the art of the possible (even if it seems like a long shot). Be accessible. Be willing to give a voice to all members of the team. Have fun. Be willing to be wrong. These have been my precepts for sustainable growth. That last one. Be willing to be wrong. We sometimes lock ourselves into our own stories which prevent us from moving forward. So, I am moving forward with each squeak and squawk, and yeah, I’m no longer talking about the flute. That same picture now symbolizes rebirth, resilience and vitality. And just maybe…I will see you from the stage again.
