She helped me on a criminal law article dealing with the United States Supreme Court’s non-capital sentencing jurisprudence. She looked at a variety of issues in the case law and in the law reviews (at that point, she had not done much research in law reviews but quickly got very good at it). She quickly grasped what I was talking about and what I was seeking; and when I was unclear (which I was as I was zeroing in on a thesis), she asked excellent questions. Her work was top notch. She also helped me with an ongoing pro bono project – litigation arguing that life without possibility of parole (LWOP) sentences are unconstitutional when applied to juveniles. For an amicus brief in a Pennsylvania court, Eileen helped me update our 50-state survey of juvenile LWOP law. She did her assigned states and then did more, which helped immensely. The work can be complicated and tedious. In some of the states, it was unclear whether juveniles are sentenced to LWOP – at times it took serious interpretive work and additional research. Eileen was very astute in dealing with these legal issues. Eileen did really well at BU Law. She transferred to UCLA because she plans to practice in California.
