About Eileen Mccall

Haló! Is mise Eibhlín - Salut! Moi c'est Eileen - Hey there! I'm EileenMy life and career has been all about the written word. I love languages, both human and programming languages, and I have for as long as I can remember. One of my earliest memories is reading the Spanish language dictionary my parents had on the shelf, and my favorite movie growing up was Atlantis: the Lost Empire, a film about a linguist (Michael J. Fox) who discovers a lost civilization. I suppose it was kind of inevitable that I developed an interest in communicating with computers too.My interest in languages led me to pursue a degree in creative writing, and then a career as a graphic designer focusing on web design. From there, it was a short hop to teaching myself to code so I could bring my designs to life. I spent nights and weekends on Udemy and Codecademy, learning the fundamentals of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. I wanted to know everything, and there was no shortage of things to be learned. That was 7 years ago, and in the time since I've been building apps and websites for small startups and large corporations. I've continued to hone my craft, and I've been lucky enough to be able to help others do the same through mentoring and collaboration. React, Angular, Vue, Ember, name a framework or technology and I've probably built (or at least broken) something made with it. Even though my experience has been mostly front-end, my passion for learning the WHYs, not just the HOWs, of software engineering have helped me craft a skill-set that makes me a versatile asset on the back-end as well.These days I'm working on open source projects, freelancing, teaching myself the fundamentals of AI and machine learning, and learning to speak Scottish Gaelic. My dream is to take the skills I've acquired over my career and use them to help speakers and learners of endangered and minority languages, like Gaelic. Words are beautiful and powerful things; they can launch a rocket into space and let a child wish their grandfather happy birthday. When you combine words, knowledge, and experience, you can do anything.
