I have recently graduated with a Masters in Engineering Mathematics. What is Engineering Mathematics? - A question asked by many, an answer known by a few cool nerds.The short answer is, learning to build mathematical models that help solve real-life problems. Through my experience at University I have worked on various projects that have been constructed in a problem-solving format. Companies and organisations would come to the University to present real-life problems, for which we had to work in groups as consultant engineers to build mathematical and data models. In doing so, I have gained a plethora of personal and technical skills (which you can see if you scroll down), but more importantly, I have developed an attentiveness to understanding complex systems that are not always visible to the naked eye.For my final year project, I had the opportunity to work closely with a professor, Mike Jeffrey, who had very recently made a ground-breaking discovery in the field of non-linear dynamics and chaos, more specifically, the discovery of 'hidden orbits' that exist within discontinuous discrete-time systems. I got to study these hidden dynamics and develop the first application of this study to a real-world system; the sleep-wake cycles. Aside from being a nerd, through my 3+ years of experience working at cocktail bars and running cocktail masterclasses, I have learned that no customer or client is too difficult to handle, no matter their state of sobriety. In my spare time, I enjoy mixing music, playing chess and reading on psychology and philosophy.
