I've been designing user experiences for 25 years, most notably to modernize the $12B Bloomberg Terminal and scale the $30B JP Morgan Markets business. The first half of my career I spent perfecting the craft of UI engineering and then UX design. During my Ph.D. in Computer Science at Columbia University, I learned the art of problem-solving inventing new HCI techniques, and building 3D augmented reality systems. I earned two patents.I was then known as the UI guy at various tech startups. I always wore multiple hats, both designing and building. I worked directly with the CEO every single day. For the second half of my career, I’ve focused on leadership. As you move up the ladder, your focus shifts from your team to your peers to your senior stakeholders. Managing all three is imperative, but deciding how much time you spend on each is the secret sauce.In my experience, executive leadership involves a mix of (1) setting a strategy for the team, (2) building the trust of senior stakeholders, and (3) learning the business to convince very powerful people to do things differently than the way they've always done it.Most of that learning was at Bloomberg as Global Head of UX for the Terminal. Leading 100+ designers, researchers, writers, and data scientists we shipped 1000s of products. Working directly with Mike Bloomberg, I led the effort to redesign and release the Next-Gen Bloomberg Terminal, modernizing the tech and workflow for 500,000+ users and positioning Bloomberg as a $12B industry-leading product.I was also the acting Head of Product for the Terminal Platform, the Developer Toolkit, and Launchpad. By overhauling the chart, security description, and quote line applications for the iconic terminal, I transformed the experience of 5M+ daily hits.In 2022, I joined JP Morgan as Head of Design to scale the $30B Markets business. We launched the new JP Morgan Markets platform for 100,000+ professionals to self-serve institutional research, portfolio analytics, and trading. Personally, every home project starts the same way as it does in the office. I recently discovered cold plunging for better health. What started as cold showers soon became a prototype using an inflatable tub and ice packs. Within a month, I’d built an industrial-sized cold plunge machine, complete with bulk-head fittings, an aquarium chiller, plumbing, and sanitation. I’m in 45℉ water for 3 minutes every morning.
