Peter Eisler is an investigative reporter at Reuters, where he focuses mainly on criminal justice issues and political extremism. In 2022, Eisler was part of a Reuters team that won a George Polk Award for stories revealing hundreds of threats against election workers and examining the problem’s roots and consequences. The series helped spur several states to adopt new laws to protect poll workers and voting officials. Eisler is a two-time winner of the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, most recently in 2021 for a series documenting thousands of inmate deaths in the nation’s local jails. His work at Reuters, including a project examining deaths associated with police use of Tasers, also has been honored with a Sidney Hillman Prize, an Edgar A. Poe Award from the White House Correspondents Association, an American Bar Association Silver Gavel Award, and prizes from the Society of Professional Journalists, the New York Press Club and the Deadline Club. Before Reuters, Eisler spent 25 years as an investigative reporter at USA Today, writing about health care, environmental issues and national security. His work helped drive major public policy changes, including laws compensating sickened nuclear weapons workers, improved fire protections in nursing homes, and improved safety testing for school lunch food. His honors at USA Today included a Gerald Loeb Award, a Sidney Hillman Prize, a duPont-Columbia Award, and several National Press Club and National Headliner awards.
