About E. Jayne Sugg
My passion is educational advocacy and language equity for multilingual communities within the United States, though my work has also taken me overseas. I recently completed my Masters Degree in Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies from the University of New Mexico. During my academic career there, I conducted multiple practitioner research studies on heritage language maintenance in urban communities, and the sociopolitical effects of English on elementary-aged students who are from multilingual, immigrant families. Findings from those projects have influenced my pedagogy greatly and I intend to continue such studies to pursue a PhD in the future.Until then, I happily teach at an IB school as a PYP English teacher. My students are 4th graders in immersive French and Spanish elementary tracks. I have experience with lesson planning, classroom management, casework, interpretation services, and culturally responsive, trauma-informed curriculum design. Additionally, I serve as the Service Learning Coordinator for Pre-K through middle school. In this role, I partner with my colleagues to help them design service learning based projects that are relevant to their IB units of inquiry throughout the year which create local, lasting change in our immediate community.
