Profile bio

About Ej Philby Burton

I attended the University of Iowa, where I earned a BA in Cinematic Arts with a French minor. I graduated With Distinction (top 5% of my graduating class) and was on the Dean's List. I am a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Throughout my studies, I spent my time learning and practicing writing, directing, and editing many short films, some for class and some outside of it. The year of 2014-15 I studied abroad in Lille, France. My intention before I arrived was simply to become more knowledgable about the French language and culture, and to learn about cinema from another culture’s point of view. After, I can attest that I learned so much more. Not only did I greatly improve my photography and language skills, but I grew as a person. Seeing all of the cultures, languages, and lifestyles in Europe has broadened my horizons; while each culture is so different, at the core we are all just people doing our best to have a meaningful life. Everyone experiences life so differently and vibrantly. I love to discover their stories.During my first internship at a film production company, I discovered that even the smallest chore was enjoyable to me because it was connected to cinema. I found that internship to be incredibly fulfilling; the longer the hours and the more work I was able to do in a day, the more satisfied I became that what I was doing was worthwhile and meaningful. The end of each long, often difficult shoot was sad to me, simply because it was finished. Filmmaking is my passion, and I am never happier than when I am working in this field.People often ask me about the films that I make, but while I am a filmmaker, the word is a bit misleading. I prefer to work on others' films rather than my own to help them fulfill their goals. To me, the best thing in the world is hearing someone describe their dream and vision and being able to help them achieve it. I started out my career in cinema by helping them achieve this on film sets, and now I am still doing the same thing, but from the other side. I currently work for the Iowa Arts Council and the Iowa film office, Produce Iowa, within the Iowa Economic Development Authority. There, I'm still able to work with Iowa filmmakers and do what I can to assist them in making their films successful.Ultimately, I hope to find happiness and adventure in this career path that I love, and help others to find the same along the way.

Listed skills include Cinematography, Video Editing, Directing, Final Cut Pro, and 22 others.

Aug 2020 - Jan 2022

Retail Associate

Landmark Luggage

West Des Moines, Ia

At Landmark Luggage, I worked as both a cashier and a salesperson. My job was less about selling suitcases—although that was a large part of it—and more about helping customers prepare for upcoming trips and vacations. When I studied abroad and traveled Europe for a year, I learned how to travel efficiently and without worrying about the details of the trip. In this job, I did my best to answer questions that customers had and helped them find luggage that best suits their needs. Everyone likes the idea of traveling, but oftentimes unnecessary stress is involved, so I worked with the customers to prepare for their trip, lower their stress, and grant them more enjoyment.

Intern Production Assistant

Screenscape Studios

West Des Moines, Iowa

At Screenscape Studios, I worked as a full-time intern for about three months. This studio produces TV commercials for the region and allowed me hands-on experience on a professional set. I gained many invaluable skills in nearly all aspects of film production. My responsibilities included buying, selling, and returning wardrobe and props; reorganizing the prop room; creating an inventory list of the studio’s technical equipment; running craft service during productions; keeping sets organized and the talent in the right place at the right time; learning to use lighting, grip, and audio equipment; observing the post-production process; gaining new on-set grip vocabulary; cleaning the workshop; and being ready to do any task asked of me quickly and efficiently. This internship gave me my first real idea of what it is like to work on a large-scale, professional set, and I discovered that I loved every minute and every chore. Working here showed me that I have chosen the right career path.

For one semester, I worked as a student producer for the Honors Program at my university. They hired me to create short films that would market and inform the student body about the various programs, scholarships, and festivals available through the Honors Program. Jan 2012 - Jan 2014

Intern

In the summer of 2013, I volunteered as an intern for Kent Newman at Full Spectrum Productions. I learned about filmmaking on the small scale and creating documentary-style movies. I now understand the importance and necessity of fundraising to support every project’s budget, as well as simple abilities like setting up lighting, working with sound, using Final Cut Pro 7, planning and executing a project, and running interviews. Working with him has allowed me to more easily and successfully create my own films, both for class and for fun.
