Produce Iowa is the Iowa State Office of Film & Media, a division within the Iowa Economic Development Authority. Produce Iowa and the Iowa Arts Council work together as an important source of outreach for Iowans who work in arts and culture, and Produce Iowa specifically serves filmmakers in our state. My position is under the Iowa Arts Council and works alongside Produce Iowa.Administration: upkeep the ReelScout Production Directory and Location Databases; plan MediaMasters professional development workshops in a variety of formats; calculate economic impact for film events; assist department with creating new websites; administer various grants and programs including the Film Lounge, Greenlight Grant, and Iowa Screenwriters Grant and fill in on other programs as needed; start up new programs such as the Iowa Screenwriters Grant and Film Festival NetworkOutreach: develop relationships with and assist Iowa film festival network; work with producers to bring filmmaking to Iowa; run email lists; attend film festivals and events to stay connected with local filmmakers; assist grant applicants with the application process; run newsletter content; control website calendar events; prepare social media postsTeamwork: work alongside Iowa Arts Council colleagues and Produce Iowa, as well as other divisions within the department; assist with the transition from Dept. of Cultural Affairs to Iowa Economic Development Authority; assist team members with Communications needs

Within the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, I work as an assistant in the finance division. At this job, some of my primary duties include intaking, coding, and organizing invoices; ordering equipment for other divisions; assisting in processing checks and bills; handling the joint email inbox; and using multiple online software systems for record-keeping.

At Landmark Luggage, I worked as both a cashier and a salesperson. My job was less about selling suitcases—although that was a large part of it—and more about helping customers prepare for upcoming trips and vacations. When I studied abroad and traveled Europe for a year, I learned how to travel efficiently and without worrying about the details of the trip. In this job, I did my best to answer questions that customers had and helped them find luggage that best suits their needs. Everyone likes the idea of traveling, but oftentimes unnecessary stress is involved, so I worked with the customers to prepare for their trip, lower their stress, and grant them more enjoyment.

At Screenscape Studios, I worked as a full-time intern for about three months. This studio produces TV commercials for the region and allowed me hands-on experience on a professional set. I gained many invaluable skills in nearly all aspects of film production. My responsibilities included buying, selling, and returning wardrobe and props; reorganizing the prop room; creating an inventory list of the studio’s technical equipment; running craft service during productions; keeping sets organized and the talent in the right place at the right time; learning to use lighting, grip, and audio equipment; observing the post-production process; gaining new on-set grip vocabulary; cleaning the workshop; and being ready to do any task asked of me quickly and efficiently. This internship gave me my first real idea of what it is like to work on a large-scale, professional set, and I discovered that I loved every minute and every chore. Working here showed me that I have chosen the right career path.

For one semester, I worked as a student producer for the Honors Program at my university. They hired me to create short films that would market and inform the student body about the various programs, scholarships, and festivals available through the Honors Program. I conducted interviews, wrote scripts, recorded video and sound, and edited the videos, all of which gave me experience in the field of nonfiction filmmaking and working with the public.

Responsibilities included assisting customers with whatever they needed courteously and in an engaging way, including bagging groceries, helping locate items, answering questions, and making their experience at Hy-Vee a pleasant one. In the deli, I weighed and packaged deli meat and cheese, and kept the area clean and organized.

In the summer of 2013, I volunteered as an intern for Kent Newman at Full Spectrum Productions. I learned about filmmaking on the small scale and creating documentary-style movies. I now understand the importance and necessity of fundraising to support every project’s budget, as well as simple abilities like setting up lighting, working with sound, using Final Cut Pro 7, planning and executing a project, and running interviews. Working with him has allowed me to more easily and successfully create my own films, both for class and for fun.
