Reading any written work is the start of a discussion with the author. The reader applies their own experiences as a lens to the story. Readers who wish to continue the author's discussion must engage and question the text and the author's purpose -- not only basics such as figurative language and character motivation, but also complexities such as pacing and rhythm of the text. My passion is helping the audience of any written work engage in that conversation to further their understanding of their world, or cause them to reflect on how they want their world to be. As a middle school and high school teacher during the last two decades, I've used my command of problem sensitivity and active listening to empower students in their ability to have more deep and complex conversations with the author. These reader-author conversation skills directly translate to speed in comprehension; while teaching middle school in the Klein school district, 90% of my students mastered the state exam each year.
