Athens, Attiki, Greece
My fourth-month internship took place at the medical diagnostic laboratory NeoLab S.A. This laboratory deals with various laboratory instrumental chemical, molecular and biochemical analyses, aimed at investigating and diagnosing endogenous metabolic diseases in the context of Newborn Screening. My daily routine included:• Planning and executing biochemical tests, in order to analyze and diagnose endogenous metabolic diseases, through ELISA enzymic techniques, such as cystic fibrosis (IRT), biotinidase, 25-OH-vitamin D3, and G6PD deficiencies, congenital adrenal hyperplasia (17-OH-PRG), galactosemia, and problems with thyroid hormone(TSH).• Getting accustomed to double mass spectrometry (Tandem MS) through NeoLynx software and HPLC.• Conducting biochemical analyses with Acylcarnitines, Organic Acids(OA), Total Fatty Acids(TFA), working on biological liquid samples ( blood, Guthrie cards, urine, blood plasma, and CSF).In the last weeks of my internship, I also worked on a project for Validating Acylcarnitines through Analytical Biochemical Methods of quality and quantification, in order to identify and diagnose pathological metabolic syndromes.
