Some of those issues are vulnerabilities to natural disasters (tornado, hurricane, earthquake), rot, mold, fire, flood, wind, pests and insects. How does it solve those issues? Being a wall of thermal mass, there is nothing to burn down; the weight of the walls is too much for a flood to move; no food for mold; and no place to burrow. Is it disaster proof? Nothing is. But in comparison to a timber home, this is much more survivable and designed with that in mind. ​Sandbag structures have taken many forms over the years and were originally developed by the military for their ease of transportation and use. They were 'rediscovered' in the 1970's during the first spur of the green movement as a way that we could build structures without binders. They are coming back full force again with advancements, also called 'superadobe', via R&D institutes such as Cal-Earth Institute of Art & Architecture. Through architects such as Cal-Earth founder Nader Khalili, GRISB.org founder Owen Geiger, Kelly Hart and Kaki Hunter as well as other well known natural builders such as Ianto Evans and Scott Howard, vast improvements have been made in the deployment and use of natural and superadobe construction for humanitarian efforts as well as in mainstream residential and commercial applications.
